We've had an email from Carolyn Murphy, a volunteer driver on the Queen's Baton Relay.

"I just wanted to give a mention to all my fellow volunteer drivers and hosts who are doing a sterling job," she writes.

"They are working away in the background making sure that each and every baton bearer's experience is wonderfully unique and enjoyable.

"They are working together and are a fantastic example of excellent teamwork.

"Although this is a once in a lifetime experience, it is exhausting and they are all still smiling (I think)."

She adds that the youngsters on the team are "the nicest, most well-mannered, helpful and motivated bunch and superb role models".

The Queen's baton handle is made of elm wood sourced from the grounds of Garrison House on the Isle of Cumbrae, and is a tribute to Scotland's natural resources.

Housed at the top of the baton is a granite 'gemstone', which can only be released by opening a puzzle mechanism. The granite was quarried from Ailsa Craig in the Firth of Clyde.

His commitment to the sport of judo is paralleled with his dedication to the local community, and he'd often be found driving gritters around in winter, clearing the roads for other drivers in the area.
