  1. Election motivations 'right and proper'published at 06:07 British Summer Time 9 June 2017

Conservative MP and former Welsh Secretary Stephen Crabb, who was re-elected in Preseli Pembrokeshire, said: "We did go into this election wanting to provide greater stability for the country, wanting to draw the country together after that divisive EU referendum campaign last year.

"The motivations for doing this election were entirely right and proper, to strengthen the position of the United Kingdom before going into what will prove to be the most difficult set of international negotiations we've faced since the Second World War.

"Clearly something has gone wrong because the country has wanted to talk about other issues at this election time.

"They wanted to raise other concerns and there are a whole lot of new voters who were less concerned about Brexit and more concerned about issues to do with quality of life and their economic security into the future."

Speaking about the results so far, Prof Richard Wyn Jones said it had been a bad night and a personal failure for Theresa May:

"There will be great anger within the Conservative party... they didn't need to call this election. It's confused their position totally."

He said it had also been a bad night for the SNP and that losing "politicians of substance" was a blow to the party.

He added: "I think we're seeing the end of the Liberal Democrats - certainly in Wales, but it's looking very bad for them in England too".

In terms of success, he described Labour's performance as "an amazing, personal success for Jeremy Corbyn".
