At least one Welsh Conservative has suggested tonight that the Welsh campaign was too centrally run.
A Welsh Conservative source said: "Five weeks ago we had a local government campaign which was a Welsh campaign."
He said the result, where Tories gained 80 council seats, "goes to show that when we fight a campaign on a Welsh basis we're successful".
"We have to remember in the era of devolution its vital that we have a Welsh campaign," he said.

A model released by pollsters YouGov two weeks ago was the first to suggest that a hung parliament could be possible.
The model, which forecast Conservatives on 302 seats and Labour on 269, was met with great scepticism due to the higher Labour seat share compared to other models.
In fact, at the moment, Labour is outperforming the model, and doing better than expected.
However, there is a very long way to go, with over 600 seats still to declare, but we should know within the next two hours whether the model remains close.
Is Labour's Chris Ruane writing his winning speech in this photo?
He had held the seat for 18 years before he lost it in the 2015 election to the Conservatives' James Davies.
