Lifeguard patrols at beaches in Jersey finish for the season this weekend.

It was the second year of the RNLI and States partnership, with patrols since May at Greve De Lecq, Plemont, St Brelade's Bay and St Ouen's Bay.

Nineteen lifeguards and two supervisors operate and during 2012 an education programme for school children was introduced.

An RNLI spokeswoman said the lifeguards would return in 2013, but the season dates were yet to be confirmed.

She said they would also look into whether any further improvements could be made next year to enhance the service.

Lifeguard Supervisor Ed Stevens said: "People visiting the beach should make sure they read the safety signage at the entrance to the beach and familiarise themselves with any local hazards such as rip currents or rocks.

"If possible, it's sensible to seek the advice of locals or other surfers. Always go with a friend or have someone on the shore looking out for you.

"If you see anyone in difficulty, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard, don't try and attempt a rescue yourself."
