Republican candidates - Rick Perry

As the first votes of the primary season approach, the BBC looks at the Republican candidates hoping to stand against President Barack Obama in November.
Rick Perry
Rick Perry entered the race in August to a burst of enthusiasm from conservative Republicans eager for an alternative on the right to Mitt Romney.
The Texas governor quickly raised considerable money and soared to the top of the polls.
But his candidacy suffered under a series of poor debate performances, including a cringe-inducing moment when he was unable to remember the name of a government department he would eliminate if elected.
Mr Perry ran on a record of job creation and fiscal discipline in Texas, and hoped to attract the support of the evangelical Christian voters who are influential in the Iowa caucuses.
He dropped out during the South Carolina primary campaign after poor showings in Iowa and New Hampshire.
