From player to manager: We look back over some of Sir Alex's greatest achievements to date

There are very few people who can claim to have achieved what Sir Alex Ferguson has in his amazing career.

The Scottish footballer started out playing for Dunfermline Athletic before becoming the manager of one of the world's most famous football teams.

For twenty-seven years he managed Manchester United and helped them become players on a global stage.

Newsround takes a look back over his many incredible achievements to date.

In his career, Sir Alex managed 808 Premier League games.

Of these games he won 527, putting his success rate at 65%!

His biggest goal win ever was against Ipswich in 1995. Manchester United won 9-0 - with five of those goals scored by Andy Cole; a Premiere League record!

Sir Alex achieved his greatest number of wins against Tottenham and Aston Villa - 38 each.

The first breakthrough for Manchester United came in 1993 after Sir Alex signed Eric Cantona.

In the first year of the Premier League, Manchester United snagged the first ever cup - and went on to do it twelve more times!

That's more than any other Premier League team to date.

In 1999 came the famous "treble". After an incredible win in the 91st minute of the Champions League final, Fergie had led Manchester United to win the three biggest prizes in football - the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Champions League.

Two weeks later Alex Ferguson became Sir Alex Ferguson.

He also oversaw a number of amazing signings - including Cristiano Ronaldo, Eric Cantona, Peter Schmeichel, Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand - which helped make Manchester United the powerhouse team it is today.
