Mighty Welsh mammoth gets pop legend name

A replica of a mammoth, who lives at the National Museum Cardiff has just been given a new name.
Meet Tom Bones! His new name was inspired by the legendary Welsh singer - and The Voice UK judge - Tom Jones, and was given to him after a public vote.
Hannah Sweetapple from the Museum explained that the model was 3D-printed from a scan of a skeleton of a real mammoth, that used to roam the Welsh borderlands, then was painted to look like real bones.
He was put on display by the museum earlier this year, and museum staff asked the public to come up with something to call him.
After a week long competition where over 1,400 suggestions were made, Tom Bones was chosen from a final three.

There were other strong name suggestions too, like BFM (Big Friendly Mammoth), Sir Tusk-A-Lot and Bendigeidfran, after the mythical Welsh giant.
And of course, it wouldn't be a public vote without the suggestion of Mammoth McMammoth Face!
Tom Bones was installed in the Main Hall at National Museum Cardiff back in March, after a five-month process to put him together.
The museum said they wanted the public to give him a name to "cement his legacy as an icon", and to show visitors that "the collection belongs to everybody".

Sir Tom Jones seems to be pretty happy with the name of the skeleton.
On social media he said: "It's not every day you have an ancient woolly mammoth names after you!"
He also asked his followers to support "our wonderful museums".
Hannah Sweetapple also suggested he should visit: "I hope he does, and sees his legacy in the National Museum Cardiff."
She added that while Museums are there to preserve the past, it's important that can also "be a place you can have fun and enjoy."
