Who won the World Tram Driver Championship 2025?

Tram drivers from all around the world took part

You may be used to using public transport like trams to to get around the place you live.

But over the weekend the vehicles took on a whole new role in Vienna, and it's pretty tram-tastic stuff! See what we did there?

Drivers from all around the world gathered in Austria's capital city on Saturday for the very first World Tram Driver Championship.

The competition took place outside Vienna's Burgtheater

25 teams, each made up of one female and one male driver, were giving the tram-mendous opportunity to compete for the world's best tram driver title on a course constructed specially for the competition in front of Vienna's Burgtheater.

Participating countries included Hungary, Ukraine, Morocco, Ireland, Brazil and China.

Thousands of tram-loving spectators came out to watch all the action live, while more than 50,000 people from around the world tuned in to the events online.

The event included quirky tasks like tram bowling

Competing drivers were tasked with taking on eight different disciplines testing lots of different abilities like starting and braking smoothly, maintaining a constant speed, reversing and executing a perfect stop.

There were also some rather unusual challenges including tram bowling and tram curling.

25 teams competed this year

The results of both drivers from each team were added together to give a final team result, with 50 competitive runs in total.

Tram drivers Jason and Kira from Edinburgh flew the flag for Great Britain at the competition, with the pair selected to represent Scotland after a tough selection process.

The event, which is the first of its kind, drew huge crowds

So who came out on top?

It was hosts Vienna who managed to secure victory at the Championship, with an impressive 5599 points.

Second place went to the Poznan team from Poland who finished with 5244 points and the drivers from Oslo in Norway were third with 5140 points.

The team from Edinburgh finished in 18th place.

The team from Vienna were crowned the overall winners of the competition.

"It was a day full of emotion, team spirit, and goosebump moments," said Wieland Stumpf who is the organiser of the tram competition.

"At the heart of the event were not only the incredible tram drivers from all over the world but also Vienna's public transport system – and the people who keep it running every single day."
