Shrewsbury Town: Relegated club release seven players

Shrewsbury Town have released seven players following the club's relegation back to League Two.

After consultation with his backroom team Mike Jackson, who took charge for the final four months of the season, and Danny Coyne, new manager Micky Mellon has released both goalkeepers.

Along with Chris Weale and Joe Anyon, five outfield players have been let go.

Asa Hall, Joe Jacobson, Alex McQuade, Paul Parry and Luke Summerfield have not been offered contracts.

But the club have offered new deals to two young players who have come through the ranks, striker Tom Bradshaw and defender Connor Goldson.

Following the end-of-season return of Town's six loan players to their parent clubs, Mellon now has 10 contracted players to work with next season, as he prepares for a summer of rebuilding at the Meadow.

Jacobson, 31, signed by Graham Turner in the summer of 2011, played a key role in Town's promotion to League One in April 2012.

And he was made stand-in skipper at times this season when Tamika Mkandawire was out injured.

Hall, 21, who returned for a second spell at the club, fellow midfielder Summerfield, 26, son of former Town player Kevin Summerfield, first-choice keeper Weale, 32, understudy Anyon, 27, and the vastly experienced Parry, 33, were all signings made by Turner following Shrewsbury's promotion.

McQuade, 21, arrived a year ago following his release by Bolton but failed to make a breakthrough.

He enjoyed just two appearances, the first as a late substitute on the opening day of the season before playing most of the game against his old club in the League Cup.

For the final two months of the campaign, he was loaned out to Conference Premier side Hyde, with whom he also suffered relegation.
