League Cup: Championship sides knocked out on night of upsets
- Published
Seven Championship sides were knocked out by lower-league clubs on a dramatic night in the League Cup first round.
Blackburn Rovers lost 2-1 at home to League One side Shrewsbury, while Brentford were comprehensively beaten 4-0 by Oxford United of League Two.
Bristol City lost 3-1 at Luton, Nottingham Forest lost 4-3 to Walsall, while Burnley lost 1-0 to Port Vale.
And to round off the night, Burton were 1-0 victors at Bolton and Notts County triumphed 2-1 at Huddersfield.
And there was almost another shock as Accrington twice fought back from a goal down to force penalties at home to Hull who, like Burnley, were relegated from the Premier League last year.
It was the Championship side who prevailed at the Wham Stadium, however, with Matt Crooks blazing the decisive spot-kick over the bar.
'A goal in a million'
The goal of the night has to go to Kemar Roofe. The Oxford forward took the ball down with a deft touch before launching it over Brentford keeper Jack Bonham on the half-volley from about 40 yards out.
That was his side's third goal in the first 12 minutes. "It was a fantastic finish - a goal in a million," said Oxford boss Michael Appleton.
But Brentford manager Marinus Dijkhuizen was less impressed. "It was an embarrassing performance from my team," he said.
"There were a lot of lessons tonight for me and for the players. That's a good thing. The bad thing is we played awfully."
And it didn't stop there
Of the 32 ties played, a further six saw the underdog claim a place in Thursday's second-round draw.
League Two club Carlisle beat Chesterfield of League One 3-1 after extra time, Hartlepool won 1-0 at Fleetwood, while Barnet beat Millwall 2-1 at The Den.
Northampton beat Blackpool 3-0, Exeter won 2-1 at Swindon and York beat Bradford 4-2 on penalties after the match finished 2-2.
There are three more first-round fixtures on Wednesday: Crewe host Preston, Oldham host Middlesbrough and Derby travel to Portsmouth. On Thursday, Doncaster host Leeds.
