Patrick Mahomes is looking, looking, looking, but the Niners have his guys contained and eventually he's brough down just a couple of yards short of the end zone.

So they have to settle for a field goal try, and Harrison Butker slots the kick from 24 yards to tie this one up at 16-16.

Another first down pick-up from Travis Kelce, then a burst of power from Isiah Pacheco right up the gut and inside the San Francisco 10.

    It's first and goal.

Another mistake from the Chiefs, this time centre Creed Humphrey with a low snap that Patrick Mahomes does well to gather and then throw downfield under all kinds of pressure.

I'm not sure I've seen this Kansas City team make so many elementary mistakes in the one game before.

There's been 58 Super Bowls and I can't think of a more courageous fourth down call [than Kyle Shanahan's].

Right then, what's the response? First off it's Patrick Mahomes to Travis Kelce and you know the rest....first down.

  7. touchdown

It's that man again, Jauan Jennings! It's just a short throw across the middle that Jennings catches at the five yard line, but he breaks a couple of tackles to get into the end zone.

He's such a powerhouse of a receiver and is so hard to bring down, especially when he's on the run.

And he must be leading the MVP race now as the third-choice receiver has now thrown and caught a touchdown in the Super Bowl.

Jake Moody misses the extra point though so the lead is just three and not four.

  8. First down!published at 02:40 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February

Kyle Shanahan goes for it on fourth and three and George Kittle converts it with a dive right at the marker to just about move the chains.

The Niners are down on the 12 but Shanahan is in no mood to just take the field goal - he wants the touchdown.

  9. 'Now it's about players, not plays'published at 02:38 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February

Jason Bell, former cornerback for the New York Giants on ITV: "The 49ers can't get anything going off third down right now. But we're into the fourth quarter and it's a different game. You can throw everything out. Now you are chasing points, fighting the clock and it's all about players and not plays."

Osi Umenyiora, former defensive end for the New York Giants on ITV: "For Kyle Shanahan, it's what we like to call squeaky bum time. It has happened to him on numerous occasions and he will be sweating buckets. Is he going to be able to exorcise those demons?"

Deebo Samuel gets just a step on the defender as he races into the end zone but Brock Purdy's pass is just agonisingly a touch too long and lands out of his grasp.

Chiefs have the lead but the 49ers have the ball, so who wins from here?

Thumbs up for Chiefs, thumbs down for the Niners....

  12. History repeating for Shanahan?published at 02:34 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February

San Francisco 49ers 10-13 Kansas City Chiefs

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan was the offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons when they blew a Super Bowl record 28-3 lead to lose Super Bowl LI in 2017 to the New England Patriots.

He was coach of the San Francisco 49ers in 2020 when the Chiefs came from 20-10 down to win 31-20.

It would really hurt to add losing a 10-0 lead in 2024 to that inauspicious list.

  13. End of the thirdpublished at 02:33 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February

San Francisco 49ers 10-13 Kansas City Chiefs

Kyle Juszczyk gets the ball again and he moves the chains to keep this drive going for the 49ers, who look to have cleared their heads and have now settled into what looks a promising drive.

Offensively this one has been tough sledding, but we've got just 15 minutes left to decide who wins the Super Bowl and it's hanging in the balance, this is just what we want!

Kyle Shanahan has work to do - will that Chiefs touchdown wake them up? You suspect they need a large dose of Christian McCaffrey to get something going.

I think Ray-Ray McCloud needs some under-12s rugby lessons. If the ball's on the floor, dive on it. Don't use your hands.

You shout 'poison, poison, poison' if the ball touches your man on a kick return because the other team can play the ball.

If he just dives on the ball and accepts he can't make any yards then you don't cost your team a turnover.

The Mahomes pressure was heating up, it's all on Purdy now.

  19. touchdown

Ha! Well, a touchdown is what they can conjure up and on the very first play following the turnover.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling is the man to score it with his very first catch of the game - and he was wide open thanks to a lovely play design by Andy Reid.

It looked like they'd need some help to finally find the end zone, and when they got it, they took full advantage immediately.

    Game on!

  20. Fumble!published at 02:24 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February

San Francisco 49ers 10-6 Kansas City Chiefs

Here we go, what's happened here then? As the Chiefs are forced to punt it again, there's a mistake by the 49ers as the ball hits a player's foot, so Ray-Ray McCloud has to try and dive on the ball but he can't get to it and the Chiefs have the ball back but down in the red zone.

What can they conjure up from here?
