The epitome of a journeyman quarterback these days, Carson Wentz will make history tonight as he starts for his sixth different team in six consecutive seasons when he stands in for JJ McCarthy at the Minnesota Vikings.

This one means more though as Wentz is a big Vikings fan.

"I used to come to the Metrodome, and I was waving the towel," Wentz said in the build-up. "And so running out of that tunnel this week will probably hit me a little bit different - in a really cool, kind of surreal way."

Here's his record, more clubs than Jack Nicklaus springs to mind...

    • 2020: Eagles
    • 2021: Colts
    • 2022: Commanders
    • 2023: Rams
    • 2024: Chiefs
    • 2025: Vikings
  16. Battle of the back-up QBs in Minnesotapublished at 17:59 BST 21 September

Cincinnati Bengals v Minnesota Vikings (18:00 BST)

BBC Sport spoke with Vikings safety Josh Metellus about the prospect of both teams having to make do without their starting quarterbacks today.

"We’d both had injuries but this is the National Football League and injuries happen all the time," he said. "It’s not the first time we’ve played the Bengals without our starter at quarterback and they’re without their starter at quarterback, so that’s normal. The next man’s got to come in and play.

"As for the defence, we’ve still got to do our job because they’ve still got really good receivers."

Coincidentally, the Vikings' past two meetings with the Bengals have both ended with a 27-24 win by the Bengals in overtime. Their most recent match-up came in December 2023, when both Kirk Cousins and Joe Burrow had suffered season-ending injuries, and Jake Browning led the Bengals to victory. He will again step in for Cincy today.

  17. Five starting QBs already out injuredpublished at 17:51 BST 21 September

San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy was ruled out last week with toe and shoulder issues, so Mac Jones came in for the 49ers' win at New Orleans.

Four other starting QBs have now joined Purdy on the sidelines having picked up injuries last week, with Joe Burrow the biggest absentee.

The Bengals star had 'turf toe' surgery on Friday, which should rule him out for about three months, but the others should all have a relatively short lay-off.

Losing your starting QB for any significant length of time usually ruins a team's season, so we'll see how these teams get on with their back-ups today and in the coming weeks.
