Summary

  1. Flag on the playpublished at 03:24 Greenwich Mean Time

    Washington Commanders 31-28 Detroit Lions

Josh Paschal rightly flagged for Detroit this time as he smashes Jayden Daniels and hits the quarterbacks head with his helmet - that's a huge no-no in the NFL and costs his side 15 yards.

    Silly one really from Paschal.

Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery work in a great package. Montgomey was key to some of those plays so I say, run them both.

  3. Great runpublished at 03:22 Greenwich Mean Time

    Washington Commanders 31-28 Detroit Lions

Jayden Daniels takes off on a really tough run when under pressure to pick up a first down. Washington have tried to look after the franchise quarterback all season but the gloves are off in the play-offs.

  4. touchdown

Touchdown - Lions!published at 03:17 Greenwich Mean Time

    Washington Commanders 31-28 Detroit Lions

That was inevitable! Jahmyr Gibbs gets the hand off eight yards out and he makes no mistakes using his speed first and then his power by lowering the shoulder to finishi it off in the end zone.

Yes, a stroke of luck for the Lions with that bad call, but that was one play of a 91-yard drive that's sure to have taken a ton of energy out of the Washington defence as well as provided a huge boost to Detroit.

Washington's offence needs an answer now.

Amon-Ra St. Brown reminds me so much of a young Hines Ward. So unheralded, does all the dirty work, so unselfish, catches everything, blocks in the run game. Jared Goff could close his eyes and throw it to St Brown.

  6. Trick playpublished at 03:16 Greenwich Mean Time

    Washington Commanders 31-21 Detroit Lions

Shovel pass inside to Amon-Ra St Brown is amazing - the fact it's from running back David Montgomery after hs took the lateral from Jared Goff is even more amazing.

Those inside flips are usualy Patrick Mahomes territory - not a running back!

  7. Detroit drivingpublished at 03:14 Greenwich Mean Time

    Washington Commanders 31-21 Detroit Lions

The Lions taking full advantage of that bogus face mask penalty as Jahmy Gibbs gets the short catch, waits for a blocker then dances into the space, throws in a spin move for good measure and gets the first down.

  8. Postpublished at 03:12 Greenwich Mean Time

    Washington Commanders 31-21 Detroit Lions

Ouch, tough one to take for Washington as they get a stop and look to get Detroit off the field, only to have a flag on them for a face mask, which in fact wasn't a face mask at all!

    That's a lifeline for Detroit.

  9. Postpublished at 03:11 Greenwich Mean Time

    Washington Commanders 31-21 Detroit Lions

David Montgomery gets smashed at the line of scrimmage, but just bounces out of the contact and then powers down the sideline for a first down. Muscular effort.

Wow! For just the second time in the game a Washington drive ends without any points as they punt the ball for the first time in the game.

That's a good start for the Detroit comeback bid.

For Detroit to get back in this game they need to be creative. For whatever reason for Goff, the lights have got a little too bright for him. Ben Johnson needs to calm him down, get him in a groove, and part of getting him in a groove involves trick plays.

Here we go then as the second half begins with Washington getting the ball, let's see if any defence turns up this half...

I don't think the defences came to play.

Take what's been given to you - that's my problem with Jared Goff tonight. Credit to the Washington defence, they're taking advantage of that.

The Commanders defence is stepping up to the challenge, getting pressure without blitzing, causing turnovers, making plays. And these quarterbacks are going toe-to-toe!

  15. Daniels continues remarkable rookie seasonpublished at 03:00 Greenwich Mean Time

    Washington Commanders 31-21 Detroit Lions

Last week Jayden Daniels became the first rookie in NFL history to lead his team in rushing and passing yards in a play-off win.

He was also the first rookie quarterback to throw at least two touchdown passes in a road play-off victory since Washington's Sammy Baugh threw for three TDs against Chicago in the 1937 NFL title game.

And tonight he's showing it was no fluke. He's completed 14 of 21 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns - and we're only at half-time.

Washington's last win in Detroit came during week eight of the 2008 season, when Santana Moss scored a touchdown in a 25-17 victory.

The only rookie quarterback who has beaten a number one seed in the play-offs is Joe Flacco, who led the Baltimore Ravens to a 13-10 win at the Tennessee Titans in that season's Divisional Round.

Jayden Daniels and the Commanders are on target for some big records here.

    Washington Commanders 31-21 Detroit Lions

And breathe! What a half that was, you'll struggle to find better entertainment than that in any sport won't you?

Seven touchdowns, over 600 yards of offence, three turnovers and a 10-point lead for the seventh seeded Commanders who came in as big underdogs against the top seeds Detroit.

What on Earth will we see in the second half?

  18. Interception!published at 02:48 Greenwich Mean Time

    Washington Commanders 31-21 Detroit Lions

No Jared Goff! He has Jameson Williams racing into the end zone but the pass is underthrown and allows Washington's Mike Sainristil to steal in for the interception in the end zone.

That's an insane ending to a truly insane first half.

  19. Postpublished at 02:45 Greenwich Mean Time

    Washington Commanders 31-21 Detroit Lions

42 seconds left on the clock and Detroit are just inside the Washington half on second down. Jared Goff then fires a dart to Jahmyr Gibbs who goes down at the 30 and they're well within field goal range now.

They'll run a play or two to find the end zone first before they take the kick though.

  20. That's a recordpublished at 02:42 Greenwich Mean Time

    Washington Commanders 31-21 Detroit Lions

The 42 points scored in the second quarter is an NFL record in the play-offs - to the surprise of nobody!

    And it's still not over...
