The air is still thick with smoke from the pre-match pyro as the Jets kick off and they stop the Broncos' return at the 20-yard line with a crunching tackle.

The Denver Broncos come into today's game on the back of a win over the Super Bowl champions as they came from behind to beat the Philadelphia Eagles 21-17 last Sunday and end their unbeaten start.

The Eagles then suffered a shock defeat to one of their divisional rivals, the New York Giants, as week six began with an upset on Thursday Night Football.

I believe in Denver's defence, in Bo Nix's tenacity and composure. But are they good enough to go against an elite team at its best? Because that was not a Super Bowl performance by the Eagles last Sunday.

Right now, I don't think the Broncos are incredible. They're working above average, which is a good place to be in their division. All they need to do is maintain this trajectory.

They're really good at leaning into their strength, which is running the ball, and that's exactly what they should do against the New York Jets at Tottenham. It's going to be the JK Dobbins show, essentially.

I spoke to former Jets safety Erik Coleman yesterday about how the team is doing under new head coach Aaron Glenn (pictured), who was previously defensive coordinator at the Detroit Lions: "It's been a disappointing season so far, not having a win yet, not having a turnover on defence.

"I think the effort's there, the talent's there, but when you see a free runner in the end zone, that's a lack of communication, partly because there's some players who are new to the team. They've been missing Jermaine Johnson, one of their best pass rushers, but he's back this week, so hopefully they can get pressure on the Broncos quarterback because that allows them to force turnovers.

"But people have to remember they're one of the youngest teams in the NFL. They've got a new coach, a new head of the organisation, so it's gonna take time to implement all the principles that the coach wants. Once the team starts to buy-in, and stops beating themselves, they'll start to have fun and have some success."

  5. Why has the Jets' defence been struggling?published at 14:25 BST 12 October

Denver Broncos v New York Jets (14:30 BST)

The Jets have an 0-5 record so are the only NFL team yet to win a game this season, but these figures show exactly why they've been struggling on defence:

    • Allowed 31.4 points per game (second worst in NFL)
    • Allowed 140 rushing yards per game (sixth worst)
    • Allowed five rushing touchdowns this season (10th worst)
    • Earned 0 turnovers - first team without a single takeaway through five games since NFL began tracking them in 1933
  6. When are this season's international games?published at 14:24 BST 12 October

    • 5 September - Kansas City Chiefs 21-27 Los Angeles Chargers (Sao Paulo)
    • 28 September - Minnesota Vikings 21-24 Pittsburgh Steelers (Dublin)
    • 5 October - Minnesota Vikings 21-17 Cleveland Browns (Tottenham, London)
    • 12 October - Denver Broncos v New York Jets (Tottenham, London)
    • 19 October - Los Angeles Rams v Jacksonville Jaguars (Wembley, London)
    • 9 November - Atlanta Falcons v Indianapolis Colts (Berlin)

New York Jets super fan Jetman in London

Many of the Jets' long-suffering fans have flown over from New York to London for today's game, including super fan 'Jetman'. He told me he's supported the Jets his whole life - he remembers having a Jets onesie as a baby - and adopted the persona of hype guy Jetman 19 years ago.

"There's definitely been some ups and downs," he said. "We've had some exciting years, we've had some tough years. But I don't consider this to be a tough year, I consider it a rebuilding year. I think Aaron Glenn's doing the right thing for our team. I know we're 0-5 but we're going to change that tomorrow.

"We have to give away less penalties, for one, and get a turnover or two. We have to win the turnover battle, no matter what. We've had none this year, it's unbelievable. No team's ever done that after five games.

"But Aaron Glenn, the defensive mind that he has, I feel like he's gonna change it up and we're gonna have a lot of turnovers."

Denver come into the game looking to seal a third consecutive win after their blowout victory over Cincinnati in week four and completing a stunning comeback win in Philadelphia last time out.

An 18-point haul in the fourth quarter completed an unlikely turnaround for Sean Payton's side, having trailled 17-3 at the end of the third period.

The Colorado-based team began the season with a home win against the Tennessee Titans, before losing by a single point against Indianapolis Colts.

Defeat to the Los Angeles Chargers followed before they got back on track with their most recent two wins to sit second in the AFC West.

  11. Fields settling in New York after tough Steelers spellpublished at 14:12 BST 12 October

A lot was expected of Justin Fields when he was selected in the first round of the 2021 draft by the Chicago Bears.

Aside from a promising 2022 season when he threw for 17 touchdowns and rushed for a further eight, the 26-year-old never quite hit the heights in Illinois and was traded to Pittsburgh last season.

It got worse with the Steelers.

After beginning last season as the starting quarterback he was benched for the returning Russell Wilson after six games and left Pennsylvania after just one year, making just 10 appearances in total.

Despite the Jets' poor results so far, Fields has shown glimpses of the player of 2022 in his opening four matches.

He has thrown four touchdowns and rushed for three more, and with the exception of his side's defeat at home to the Bills in week two, has topped 200 passing yards in each game.

Complete 246 more today and he'll reach 1,000 passing yards for the season and then will already be chasing down his total from his entire time in Pittsburgh [1,106].

  12. Jets still looking for first win of seasonpublished at 13:59 BST 12 October

Denver Broncos @ New York Jets (14:30 BST)

New York Jets began the season with the tightest of 34-32 defeats at home to the Pittsburgh Steelers, having led by two points at half-time.

There were many positive signs in that opening match for Aaron Glenn's side, with quarterback Justin Fields beginning his career at MetLife Stadium with one passing touchdown and 218 yards and running in another two scores on the ground.

Yet they come into today's game 0-5 and still searching for their first win following further defeats to the Buffalo Bills, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Miami Dolphins and Dallas Cowboys.

Garrett Wilson has scored in four of those matches, in which the Jets have averaged a score of 22.4 points.

But to get their first win today they'll need to sure up their creaky defence. Only the Baltimore Ravens defence has conceded more than their 157 points.

  13. Denver not dark horses after Eagles winpublished at 13:55 BST 12 October

Denver Broncos v New York Jets (14:30 BST)

The Denver Broncos have been mentioned as potential Super Bowl contenders after beating defending champions Philadelphia last week.

Bo Nix was the sixth quarterback to be drafted last year, immediately becoming the Broncos' starter, and, but for a sensational season for Washington's Jayden Daniels, he might have won the Offensive Rookie of the Year award.

Nix showed the maturity and composure to lead coach Sean Payton's offence as Denver reached the play-offs for the first time since winning the Super Bowl in 2016.

    Media caption,

Are the Denver Broncos this season's dark horses?

And the 25-year-old played his part in a statement win in Philadelphia that saw Denver move from dark horses to genuine contenders.

The Jets have a new general manager, new head coach and new quarterback, but no wins so far and look unlikely to even match last year's 5-12 finish.

But quarterback Justin Fields can produce explosive plays with his arm and legs, and a mid-season trip to London has often provided the springboard for a team to turn around their fortunes.
