Kent v Hampshire: Chris Wood sparks Kent collapse

Chris Wood is playing his first Championship match this season.

Kent suffered a poor second day as paceman Chris Wood took a career-best 5-39 to put Hampshire in charge at Canterbury.

Resuming on 343-7, the visitors lost Sean Ervine to the first ball of the day and were then bowled out for 380.

Kent soon lost opener Daniel Bell-Drummond (2) to James Tomlinson and quickly slumped to a total of just 191, Darren Stevens top scoring with 64.

Leading by 189, Hampshire opted not to enforce the follow-on, closing on 57-0.

Hampshire will begin day three 246 runs ahead and with all 10 second-innings wickets in hand as England international Michael Carberry and captain Jimmy Adams, both on 26, look to capitalise.

"Chris Wood took career-best figures of 5-39 as Hampshire dominated day two.

"For the 24-year-old, that performance will be particularly satisfying as he is playing his first Championship game of the season after a winter knee operation.

"But Hampshire's already commanding position in the game was due to all their seam bowlers gaining some swing and at times some seam movement out of an easy-paced pitch. The Kent seamers today couldn't find any such movement."

"Kent will have to be at their bowling best on day three if they are to limit the size of the mountainous target Hampshire will look to set after Kent's batting collapsed in the face of Hampshire's seamers, who extracted every degree of movement available from the Canterbury pitch.

"Kent skipper, Rob Key, told BBC Radio Kent: 'We will have to bowl well then bat better, this was not a 190 pitch'."
