    Smith c Madushka b Rathnayake 21 (Eng 192-5)

    Caught behind on the drive!

An attempt to play expansively ends with Smith departing from the final ball of Rathnayake's over.

The England keeper misses a pull shot, then picks up four with an uppish shot that's wide of mid-on.

He attempts a big drive from the next ball, but can only edge behind to Nishan Madushka.

The end of a key partnership for England and a fantastic breakthrough for Sri Lanka.

A steady little partnership is building now.

Jamie Smith looks very composed once again, as soon as he got into the middle. Joe Root looks as sublime as he usually does.

  3. Eng 187-4published at 48 overs

Root continues to enjoy himself, firing Jayasuriya's opening delivery through the covers for four.

He finishes on the over on 78 from 111 balls.

He's taken a good chunk out of the turf there. That could've been really nasty.

  5. Eng 182-4published at 47 overs

    Double ouch!

Smith cracks a straight dive off Rathnayake's boot, then Dhananjaya de Silva jams his knee into the turf when recovering the ball on the boundary.

He does stop the ball though, and England take three. That's the fifty partnership.

It would have been a very good catch but that's a definite opportunity missed for Sri Lanka.

  8. Eng 177-4published at 45 overs

Two fours through deep third for Joe Root, one glorious, one slightly fortuitous.

He times Rathnayake's second ball beautifully to the ropes, but his shot from the final delivery only just evades the fielder at gully.

It's a lovely day, but there is a very stiff breeze blowing across the ground, from the direction of the Pavilion to the Nursery End, behind the rotating seamers. I'm at the back of the Edrich Stand and, in the shade, it's pretty chilly. There are two guys in front of me drinking some red from plastic wine glasses. Preparation.

  10. Eng 169-4published at 44 overs

Lovely stuff - Smith drops backs to lash Jayasuriya's wide-ish delivery through the covers.

    He's onto 14 from 42 deliveries.

That's probably the streakiest shot we've seen from Joe Root so far. It was not far away from off stump.

  13. Eng 165-4published at 43 overs

    Almost chopped on!

Root inside edges Rathnayake's first delivery and it just about misses the stumps, scudding away for a four at fine leg.

The seamer then goes up for lbw against Root off the final ball of the over, but Sri Lanka don't review - good decision, impact was outside the line.

  14. Eng 161-4published at 42 overs

    And there's the scoring shot!

Smith is brought back onto strike against Jayasuriya and immediately lashes the Sri Lanka spinner through the covers for four.

Jamie Smith is showing that he can play at all different tempos. He has absorbed the pressure, knowing that Sri Lanka were on top when Harry Brook got out.

His scoring rate doesn't matter at all. We know that he's going to catch up.

  16. Eng 156-4published at 41 overs

    Make that 19.

Root takes a second ball single into the leg side and Smith defends each remaining Rathnayake delivery confidently.

  17. Eng 155-4published at 40 overs

Joe Root whips Jayasuriya away for another three, out to mid-wicket, before Smith faces out the last three balls of the over.
