    Perfection from Joe Root.

He is so clever with the sweep shot. As soon as he sees the ball is outside of his right eye, he's down.

Joe Root picks up his first four of the afternoon session, sweeping Jayasuriya past square leg.

The short ball isn't getting up much but it can actually be effective on a slower pitch, because the batters almost have too much time, which can force a mistake.

At least if your plan is bowling short, you can set a field for it. At the moment, they are bowling both sides of the wicket without a plan and there's no way of stopping Harry Brook.

  6. Eng 124-3published at 29 overs

Harry Brook looks really well set here.

He pulls Kumara for four through mid-wicket, then delicately cuts him away to the ropes for a second boundary.

That takes him to 32 from 42, adding 23 in the five overs since lunch.

I can see spin playing a big part in this Test match.

Over the next few days there will be footholes and cracks in the pitch for them. We saw during The Hundred that the square is very, very dry here this summer.

  8. Eng 115-3published at 28 overs

Rathnayake's post-lunch spell just lasts just one over as Prabath Jayasuriya comes in to replace him.

He's changing ends, having bowled six balls from the opposite direction in the morning session.

Root sweeps to takes the one run from his opening salvo.

There is absolutely nothing happening through the air or off the pitch. Sri Lanka are just hoping for a mistake.

  10. Eng 114-3published at 27 overs

Brook carries on against Kumara, guiding his first ball past point for two.

Promising signs of a fruitful session under sunny skies at Lord's.

Harry Brook looks like he's "in" already, so if I were Sri Lanka I'd be going straight to the short stuff and test him out.

That cut probably should've been stopped but that does show how much quicker the Lord's outfield is compared to Old Trafford in the last Test.

Brook ballooned it back over the bowler. He's had a scratchy start after lunch.

  14. Eng 110-3published at 26 overs

Brook brings up England's hundred, spooning a shot over the head of Rathnayake.

No questions about the timing of his next shot, unfurling a beautiful drive through the covers.

He picks up a second four later in the over, cutting away to the ropes.

Brook had given up on that.

  16. Eng 99-3published at 25 overs

    Oooof, could have been tight.

Root knocks Kumara's second delivery towards gully and sets off. Nissanka throws in on the dive and missing the stumps and a chance to running out Harry Brook. He probably could have taken a bit more time there, Brook was miles away.

Kumara then almost draws an edge from the following delivery - a solid start.

If Root is still there in 20 minutes, with the sun out, he'll be looking good.

  18. Eng 97-3published at 24.1 overs

    Root 29, Brook 9

Right, time to get going again.

The barrel-chested Lahiru Kumara bustles in and finds a bit of extra bounce bowling to Root, almost drawing an edge as he attempts a cut.

Harry Brook and Joe Root are stood on the sidelines, waiting to walk back out to the middle.

In fact, Brook has got bored of waiting and has sat down with his back against the advertising boarding.

Meanwhile Ben Stokes has wandered into the pavilion, having done some lunch time work towards his recovery from his hamstring injury.

  20. Postpublished at 13:39 British Summer Time 29 August

Jonathan Agnew and Alastair Cook have spent the lunch break discussing the new England white-ball squads, profiling the five new faces in the selection.

I'm sure that will feature on a podcast, tune in if you weren't listening already (or even if you were!).
