As ever we got messages calling for Ben Foakes to be recalled after an England wicketkeeper dropped a catch. It happens every time without fail.

I checked the stats. Foakes has dropped 15 catches in his England Test career.

I've just watched the Jamie Smith drop of Saud Shakeel again. It was a really tough chance with big deviation. The ball hit him on the shin rather rather gloves.

Really looking forward to the afternoon session, still in the balance, Pakistan's innings hinges on Shakeel staying at the crease with the tail. England on the other hand have Ahmed, game on!

The afternoon session will begin at 09:30 with 187-7, 80 runs behind England's first-innings score.

The Times' Simon Wilde on Ollie Pope's future: "Ollie Pope and Zak Crawley both average low 30s. I don't think the management care, if they can get a quick 70 and set the opposition back.

"We look at hundreds but I don't think they look at hundreds in the same way. Pope has played influential innings.

"In English cricket there are not enough top-order players but loads who bat four, five, six or seven.

"Joe Root doesn't want to bat number three. The good players don't want to do it so you are left with the players who have to do it."

Press Association's Rory Dollard, speaking about Ollie Pope's future: "Inevitably there is always one batter who is under the microscope. It is Ollie Pope at the moment. My reading on it is he will be starting in the Ashes barring injury. Given the amount of capital they have invested in him, I don't think England are ready to go back on that.

"I wonder if the captaincy came at an unhelpful time for him. I wonder if he needed to be dead focussed on his own game. He had to do it here as well when Stokes was ruled out.

"He could do with a good summer against India next summer."

Eifion isn’t the only person following from Japan. My wife and I have been following the feed whilst hiking the Nakasendo Trail in the Kiso Valley on our honeymoon. Hoping that Pakistan might be bowled out whilst we go for a dip in the onsen!

Tazeem Ali, the young bowler from Warwickshire, just happens to be on holiday in Pakistan. He is bowling in the middle at lunch and has been in the nets in previous days.

It is a comment on the England environment that they have embraced him and he is being coached by the senior team.

Sounds like a good time for a score check from Pune.

New Zealand have progressed to 46-1, meaning they lead by 149 runs.

Washington Sundar has taken the one wicket to fall - that of Devon Conway who was out lbw for 17.

The Black Caps are scoring at more than four runs per over as they look to press on from this commanding position.

Not sure if can beat Japan, but following from the Indian himalayas near the end of a four-day trek, my Indian guides are more interested in the collapse to New Zealand though!

Leach has done great this series and clearly still has life left in him. But with England’s aim of building for the future should they drop him and focus on Bashir and Ahmed? If those two keep developing and England nurture them, we could be looking at one of the best spin partnerships of all time if they stick together for the next 10-15 years.

Cricinfo Pakistan writer Danyal Rasool on the hosts' pitch preparations: "Pakistan are trying to maximise home advantage but feel slightly guilty about it. Here they didn't have the luxury of a recycled pitch here so had to try something different. It hasn't helped their seamers have all gone off the boil.

"It works in the short-term but I am not sure what the long-term plan is."

Rehan Ahmed wrestled this Test back towards England during that morning session.

Pakistan were starting to gain the upper hand before England's 20-year-old leggie took three quick wickets.

He broke the crucial partnership by having Muhammad Rizwan lbw on the sweep and followed by dismissing Salman Ali Agha and Aamer Jamal.

Salman was lbw and Jamal bowled via an inside edge.

At lunch Pakistan are 187-7, still 80 runs behind. It really is well-poised.

Saud Shakeel is the crucial man. He was dropped by Jamie Smith on 26 earlier but it was a really tough edge to take.

With an extended lunch break ahead of us prior to the afternoon session, it's time to bring in our very own game-changer. Here's Matthew Henry.
