The deficit is now under 100 after Aamer Jamal pounces on a short ball from Jack Leach and thumps it down the ground.

Leach responds with a ripper next ball. Dragging Jamal forward and getting the ball to turn significantly to beat the bat.

Everyone wondered coming into this Test match what Rehan Ahmed would be like bowling, he's really settled into his style here quickly and looks good for it.

He has done exactly what Ben Stokes needed him to.

  3. Pak 163-6published at 54 overs

Relief for Pakistan as they get through a Rehan Ahmed over without losing a wicket.

Can they get back to the steady accumulation we saw early in this session or is the pitch doing enough now that a more aggressive approach might be needed?

Just waking up? Two quick wickets for Rehan Ahmed have given England the upper hand.

The tourists have been made to work hard this morning. Shoaib Bashir had Shan Masood caught at slip for 26 before a resolute 52-run stand between Muhammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel moved Pakistan into a strong position.

But leg-spinner Ahmed, having been held back by Ben Stokes, dismissed the sweeping Rizwan lbw in his second over of the day.

In his next over he had the dangerous Salman Ali Agha pinned in front by a lovely leg-spinner.

Pakistan are still more than 100 runs behind with four wickets left. Shakeel is still there and has been solid since Jamie Smith put down a tough chance when the left-hander was on 26.

This is also an extended morning session because of Friday prayers so England have time to nip out another before lunch at 08:30 BST.

From going along very nicely with Saud Shakeel and Muhammad Rizwan, Pakistan now have work to do to get up towards parity on first-innings.

Shakeel is still there on 61 and this is a vital stand with Aamer Jamal, who is a very capable batter, but one more wicket and England are into the tail.

    Superb again from Rehan Ahmed.

He starts with a googly to Aamer Jamal, finds the inside edge but the ball is just out of reach of Ollie Pope at bat-pad.

Another excellent over from the young wrist-spinner.

    Salman lbw b Ahmed 1 (Pak 153-6)

Umpire's call on impact and hitting the stumps - but that'll do for England!

It's superb bowling from Rehan Ahmed again. A bit of drift in to the right-hander, just enough turn to take the ball past the outside edge and onto the back leg of Salman Ali Agha.

Clipping off stump. The leg-spinner is working his magic for England.

Rehan Ahmed might have done it again.

He turns one past Salman Ali Agha's bat, onto the back leg and the umpire's finger goes up.

The travelling England fans are in good voice in Rawalpindi, doing all they can to encourage their side as they push for further wickets.

Jack Leach is back on and gets through a decent over.

Still more than half an hour until lunch, England will want at least one more wicket before then.

Rehan Ahmed is enjoying himself now.

The ball to dismiss Muhammad Rizwan just straightened enough but his googly to new batter Salman Ali Agha turns big.

It stays low as well and Salman does well to jam the bat down on it at the last minute.

A thick outside edge ends the over. Drift for the England leggie, too. Very good over.

Muhammad Rizwan likes the slog sweep but he picked the wrong bowler to use it. Rehan Ahmed has just arrived, give it a minute to see what he's like and then see what shots to make.

England needed that wicket, they were searching for it.

    Rizwan lbw b Ahmed 25 (Pak 151-5)

Three reds and Muhammad Rizwan is gone!

The Pakistan batter was reaching for the sweep, missed and was hit on the back leg.

It looked plumb and ball-tracking shows it was. Hitting a third of the way up middle and off.

Rehan Ahmed with the crucial breakthrough for England.

  17. Pakistan reviewpublished at 49.3 overs

Has Rehan Ahmed made the breakthrough?

It certainly looks like it as Muhammad Rizwan misses with a sweep and is given out lbw.

He reviews but does not look confident.

This pitch currently has a PitchViz pace rating of 0.7 (the higher the number, the pacier the pitch) - which makes it the joint-second-slowest pitch in the ball-tracking era for the first two days of a Test.

That is probably one of the main reasons why despite having the highest deviation off the surface for any Test in the first two days of a Test in Pakistan it has still not proved to be unplayable.

Typical Test match batting, occupy the crease and score runs when you can. Saud Shakeel has impressed me.

A ripple of applause from the Rawalpindi crowd as a single for Muhammad Rizwan brings up the fifty partnership.

This is turning into a very good session for Pakistan.

Plenty for England to ponder at drinks - and a quick reminder that it's an extended morning session today so play will go on until 08:30 BST.

They'll then take an hour for lunch for Friday prayers.
