Saud Shakeel has been great. His batting against spin is flawless.

    I'm not so sure, Chris.

Given how this pitch is expected to deteriorate and the fact Pakistan will likely have to bat last on it, I fancy England would still be confident with parity on first-innings - or even a small lead for the hosts.

Anyway, it's a good start for Rehan Ahmed. The leggie is landing it nicely early in the spell and the penultimate delivery of the over stays low to Muhammad Rizwan.

This is a critical part of the match. We have to get a lead of at least 50 I think if we are going to win. Need to not let this partnership build. A bit of inspiration needed. Maybe a couple of overs from the skipper?

Good over from Shoaib Bashir, probably his best since he returned to the attack but Saud Shakeel and Muhammad Rizwan are doing a good job of digging in when they need to.

Their partnership is up to 45 and England are very much in need of a wicket.

With that in mind, here comes Rehan Ahmed...

If Pakistan can keep it below two wickets before lunch, I think they'll be happy.

Just a single from the fourth - and final? - over of Gus Atkinson's spell.

He's done what been asked of him but with lateral movement essential non-existent for the seamer, it might be time for a bit of Rehan Ahmed.

    Rizwan 21, Shakeel 52

Pakistan have been able to up the tempo a little in the last few overs with the ever busy Muhammad Rizwan a big part of that.

Saud Shakeel is also looking increasingly comfortable and starting to bring out those sweeps he plays so well.

I'm really impressed with Saud Shakeel's patience in this game.

Saud Shakeel reaches 50, these are valuable runs in the context of this game, he's really had to work hard for these runs.

A sweep smashed along the ground in front of square for four - and that's Saud Shakeel's fifty.

It's his sixth against England in Tests and comes up from 92 balls.

He got a life earlier today when an edge off Shoaib Bashir was put down and he's made the most of that good fortune.

This situation suits Muhammad Rizwan because he's good against spin.

Still Gus Atkinson continues but it looks like Rehan Ahmed is warming up so the leg-spinner might be introduced before too long.

Either that or it's just a reminder to the skipper that he's there and ready to go.

Meanwhile, Muhammad Rizwan advances to Atkinson and pushes back down the ground for two.

Pakistan are frustrating England, just ticking away, slowly catching up. It's a completely different approach compared to England's.

All a bit untidy after Saud Shakeel sweeps nicely behind square.

Rehan Ahmed initially does well to get round and prevent the boundary but his throw is wayward, Shoaib Bashir has to run to try and collect it, can't grab it cleanly and Pakistan get an overthrow from it.

We've also seen a graphic showing both Bashir and Jack Leach have bowled that much quicker than Pakistan's Sajid Khan and Noman Ali. Might it be worth the England spinners slowing it up a tad?

Shoaib Bashir has been much more accurate with his lines today as opposed to day one.

Yesterday, almost 21% of his deliveries were either wide of off or down the leg, that has reduced to only 10% today.

He has also been getting much more drift through the air today (almost three times more than yesterday) and 25% more turn.

Batters have played a false shot to 21% of his deliveries today, this was only 8% yesterday.

Gus Atkinson continues and is still zeroing in on the stumps.

Muhammad Rizwan is able to use the pace and work the ball through the leg side for three, just about keeping his balance to play the shot.

A single for Saud Shakeel completes the scoring for the over and it looks like Shoaib Bashir is going to return to the attack.

So yesterday I floated the idea of Jamie Smith eventually replacing Ollie Pope as England's number three.

The reaction was, erm, mixed. I wouldn't say I'm advocating it, I can just see a scenario how it happens.

A lot of people, quite rightly, are making the point of why would it make sense to move Smith from a position where he is doing so well?

The other issue is the keeping, and I know England have been down the gloves hokey-cokey with the likes of Jonny Bairstow and Jos Buttler before. The question is whether Smith, who is a good keeper but relatively inexperienced at first-class level, will have either his glovework or batting affected by combining both jobs in Test cricket.

If he was freed of the gloves, could England end up with a better keeper and a superstrength version of Smith's batting?

Very nicely played by Saud Shakeel.

The left-hander is down quickly to sweep Jack Leach convincingly square of the wicket for four.

More than an hour into the day and the pitch is holding up pretty well, somewhat frustratingly for England.

Muhammad Rizwan was quick to seize on that opportunity. Skilfully played, he's a very busy cricketer.
