England and not dismissing the lower order: a Tail as old as time...

At last a bit of excitement for England at least, as two lbw decisions against Noman Ali are turned down. Shoaib Bashir was on one knee pleading for the second but Chris Gaffaney remained unmoved.

An inside edge was the issue with the second one.

So England seem to have decided they can't afford to give away runs quickly, and have settled into allowing five easy risk free runs an over. And it's not worked for the last 60 run partnership. So why are they just continuing doing the same thing?

  6. Pak 251-7published at 80.1 overs

England have taken the new ball right away and tossed it straight to Jack Leach.

They need to make quick use of it.

The new ball - something England have been waiting for for the past 40 minutes, I reckon - is now available.

This is Saud Shakeel's fourth century in Test cricket, his first against England and only had four fours, all of which were after reaching 50.

72 of the runs in Saud Shakeel's hundred have been singles. That's a lot of nudging and not a lot of big-hitting.

Zaltz is getting very excited because that might be a record.

Saud Shakeel should be very proud of that innings. Very tame celebration as well, it looks like he's not done yet.

It's been an exemplary performance by Saud Shakeel, one of maturity and patience.

    And there's the century!

Saud Shakeel celebrates as he has batted - calmly and with minimal fuss.

It has kept Pakistan right in the game.

Pakistan don’t have a lead yet, Stevo, Cheltenham. Not sure you could argue England did any worse at this stage.

  15. Pak 242-7published at 78 overs

    Shakeel 98, Noman 36

Ben Stokes just laid flat on his back after this missed chance.

He is stood close because of the lack of bounce we have seen.

The edge went high and to his weaker hand. Not many would catch it but Stokes is probably annoyed he didn't.

    Joe Root is on...

And the first ball there's a chance! Noman Ali edges one and for the first time in the day there's bounce.

It goes up and over Ben Stokes at slip and he can't quite cling on as he dives one-handed.

There's many things to love about this England side, particularly on the entertainment side, but the continued almost giving up on attacking tail end batsmen once they've been in 25 minutes isn't one of them.

Noman Ali sweeps for four now to add to England's problems. Ben Stokes, perhaps with that frustration building, hurls the ball at the stumps as this pair go for a single.

It has missed by a fair way but had Stokes hit it would have been out.

Saud Shakeel is toying with England here. They cannot stop his flow of ones and twos.

It's been a really fine effort.
