'He's having a terrific game!' - Pant brings up half-century

Rishabh Pant has had some good fortune in this innings - and gets some more here.

Another edge off Josh Tongue and this one goes through the second/third slip area - again at a catchable height - for four.

That takes him to 49 and a clip to leg brings him two to bring up his 16th Test half-century.

The left-hander follows that up by flaying Tongue through the covers for four.

In Bashir's defence, Jadeja also didn't threaten much. Not sure any spinner would be dominating here.

Look at that take off! We have seen a couple of them today but that is definitely something to do with the pitch.

    Where did that come from?

Josh Tongue gets one to jump from a length and rap KL Rahul on the gloves.

Good signs for England's bowlers - the batters might be less thrilled to see it as they look ahead to the chase.

Change of angle from Shoaib Bashir as he moves to round the wicket to the right-handed KL Rahul.

After five singles, the experienced opener pushes a single into the gap at point. Bashir has bowled reasonably well, pretty tight, but there hasn't been a huge amount threat.

Just don’t understand how Bashir gets into this side. There’s a player there, but he can’t get a game for a Division 1 county side and not looked particularly threatening.

I'm hoping this brings about a flurry of wickets, but neither Rahul or Pant look even vaguely threatened by Bashir...

Pant had been playing quite carefully since lunch. There is also the Pant factor, if he is there after tea he can go.

  9. Ind 179-3published at 55 overs

The runs are just starting to come a little more easily for India as Rishabh Pant just opens the face a fraction and guides the ball down to deep third for four.

    All very controlled.

Not so much later in the over. Josh Tongue gets one to leap from back of a length and beat Pant's bat as he tries to cut.

England, please note. It is good to be circumspect, even cautious if the situation demands it whilst batting. India have flair batsmen who can rein it in sensibly if there is a need. England tend to bat furiously at all times, no matter what the circumstances. A Test match tests much more than a rapid runs per over ratio

Rahul sweeps Bashir delivery towards deep backward square leg for four

Strong sweep shot from KL Rahul to start Shoaib Bashir's over.

The India opener hammers it away behind square, giving the fielder in the deep no chance.

  13. Ind 171-3published at 53 overs

    Rahul 79, Pant 41

Horrible swipe across the line from Rishabh Pant to a length delivery from Josh Tongue.

He's relieved to see it bounce over the stumps and India even sneak a bye as the bobbling ball gets away from Jamie Smith.

It's sedate progress for India so far after lunch. It's just little runs here and there.

  16. Ind 168-3published at 52 overs

Big turn for Shoaib Bashir as he bowls from round the wicket to the left-handed Rishabh Pant.

That one clips the edge of the foot mark and Pant leaves it well alone.

Just a pair of singles from the over.

A first slip does go in after those two boundaries but it feels like the horse has already bolted.

A single ends the over and keeps Rishabh Pant on strike.

How will he approach it against the off-spin of Shoaib Bashir?
