Summary

  1. Afg 81-3published at 20 overs

Finally a productive over for Afghanistan with four more singles worked off the rest of the over.

  2. 6 runs

    Afg 77-3published at 19.2 overs

    Do my eyes deceive me?

Ibrahim Zadran skips down the pitch and whacks Adil Rashid for six straight down the ground. Lovely strike.

  3. Afg 71-3published at 19 overs

Just the 72 dot balls in 19 overs.

Joe Root twirls through his first over and concedes only a couple of singles.

Mark Wood has returned and jogged all of the way to fine leg. There is no obvious limp.

England say he’s had his left knee restrapped.

Might be dull cricket currently but can England's bowlers get a bit of credit for that given the pasting they've taken in recent matches?

  6. Afg 69-3published at 18 overs

Adil Rashid races through another tidy over, and there is some good news for England as Mark Wood jogs back out on to the field.

England will be pleased to see that there's minimal spin for Adil Rashid because that's really the strength of the Afghanistan attack.

  8. Afg 65-3published at 17 overs

Yesterday was my first live text stint since December. It was rained off.

At least I actually have some cricket to talk about today, but it's coming from a team who don't seem to want to score any runs.

    Great.

  9. Afg 61-3published at 16 overs

Hashmatullah Shahidi tries to put some pressure back on Adil Rashid by reverse-sweeping a ball from way outside his off stump, somehow dragging it safely for two runs.

They've got to try and be proactive here because this approach is making England's job very, very straightforward even when they're a bowler down.

  10. Afg 56-3published at 15 overs

That was the first boundary in 45 balls, by the way.

    Electric.

England have had a good start but there will be two things on Jos Buttler's mind.

The Mark Wood situation, is he fit enough to finish his overs? Also, how is he going to juggle his fifth bowler?

  12. Afg 55-3published at 14.2 overs

    There it is, finally.

Hashmatullah Shaidi carves a wide delivery from Jamie Overton past point for four.

  13. Afg 51-3published at 14 overs

Afghanistan bring up their fifty as they tick eight runs from Adil Rashid's second over but without a boundary.

I can't even remember when the last one was.

Maybe harsh, but let's retire Wood. Rarely has world-class days, massively injury prone, and when you're off only a bit you'll get carted round the park by anybody half decent.

  15. Afg 43-3published at 13 overs

Well, Afghanistan can barely lay bat on ball but at least the overs are going by quickly.

Ibrahim Zadran keeps wafting and missing outside off stump to Jamie Overton and hoping for the best. It's not working.

  16. Afg 42-3published at 12 overs

Still very cautious from Afghanistan and they are going nowhere.

Two from Adil Rashid's first over.

It is Mark Wood’s left knee that is the problem.

England say the issue is being assessed.

  18. How's stat?!published at 10:00 Greenwich Mean Time

    Soham Sarkhel

It has been 14 games since England last took three or more than three wickets between overs 1-10 in an ODI - that was against West Indies in Antigua in 2023. They have achieved this only thrice in 25 ODIs since the start of the 2023 World Cup. In the last 20 occasions in ODIs where England have achieved this, they have won 16 and lost just three (with one no result).

  19. Afg 40-3published at 11 overs

Afghanistan haven't had any answers to Jofra Archer this morning.

He's got 3-22 from his six overs so far.

  20. Afg 39-3published at 10 overs

Jamie Overton is into England's side today in place of the injured Brydon Carse.

He concedes just two from his first over to complete the opening powerplay, which Jos Buttler's side have completely dominated.
