Summary

  1. Afg 37-3published at 9 overs

Afghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi comes to the crease to try and rescue his side. Can they put the pressure back on England, who are probably a bowler down for the rest of the innings?

Jofra Archer has all three wickets so far - here are the first two.

That is a good catch. It was a horrible attempt at a pull shot. He got in no position to play that at all.

  3. wicket

    Rahmat c Rashid b Archer 4 (Afg 37-3)

Jofra Archer has three! His pace continues to trouble Afghanistan as a shorter ball does for Rahmat Shah.

Archer bangs it in just back of a length, and Rahmat can't control his pull shot at all. Adil Rashid makes decent ground at fine leg and takes a smart catch quite low to the ground.

A far from ideal start for the side who chose to bat first.

England are already juggling a fifth bowler so they won't want to be without Mark Wood's full 10-over allocation. He's bowled four overs so they could be six overs light if he can't continue.

He doesn't look great as he walks off the field.

I'm sure Mark Wood will have some painkillers and be OK but the worrying thing is that it is his landing knee and they'll have to assess whether it is still bracing when he lands. It looked like it was during those final two balls.

  6. Afg 34-2published at 8 overs

Well, Wood manages to complete the over but it doesn't look like he'll be bowling much more today.

He falls in his follow-through from the final delivery and is still walking cautiously as he leaves the field. Tom Banton comes on as a sub fielder.

England are already one seamer down after Brydon Carse's withdrawal so this is a worry.

Mark Wood has had a knee problem for a long time and that knee is heavily strapped in warm-up.

He's just stretching it out and doing a few different tests.

  8. Afg 33-2published at 7.4 overs

    This doesn't look good.

Mark Wood is limping and the physio is called out. Looks like an issue with his knee.

Before his injury, 18% of Jofra Archer's deliveries were inswingers in overs 1-10. Since his comeback, that has almost doubled to 35%. As a result, his deliveries are now projected to hit the stumps 13% of the time, that figure was 5% before his injury. His average length has also moved half a metre fuller.

That is a great couple of boundaries for Ibrahim Zadran. I've just played with him in the ILT20 actually and he's a really talented batter. He's better against spin than pace actually but he's really important for Afghanistan here.

  11. Afg 30-2published at 7 overs

Back-to-back boundaries for Ibrahim Zadran, as the batting side finally find some momentum and put a bit of pressure back on England.

The first is too wide and slashed through the covers for four, the second a textbook straight drive past the bowler. Both ping off the bat and race to the boundary to show this is a good pitch and quick outfield.

That was a quick ball, it was almost off the face of the bat. It was just to the left of Jofra Archer but that is where he was aiming. Archer just couldn't quite get there.

  13. 6 runs

    Afg 21-2published at 6 overs

    About time!

Ibrahim Zadran has two from 14 balls as Mark Wood's pace has him hopping all around the crease before he uses the extra pace to guide the ball over deep third for six.

A testament to how quick Wood is bowling because that absolutely flew. There's a fielder in place down there, but Jofra Archer can't even get a hand to it.

England would love another wicket, knock out the top order if they can.

Brilliant over from Jofra Archer, who has 2-9 from his three overs.

Just the sort of opening spell from him and Mark Wood that England fans have been waiting a long time to enjoy.

Jofra Archer has got his two wickets with two full balls.

Sediqullah Atal seemed to be tempted by the gap on the leg side and I wonder if that was a deliberate ploy from England.

It has almost been a perfect start for England. They've got two wickets and Afghanistan have built up no momentum.

  17. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 4.5 overs

    Sediqullah lbw b Archer 4 (Afg 15-2)

    Gone!

The ball was passing very close to the bat, but replays show that it was pad first and from there, it's hitting middle stump.

A poor review and Afghanistan are really struggling.

It was a really confident appeal from Jofra Archer.

Surely the batter would have reviewed straight away if he'd hit it?

    Two in the over?!

Number three Sediqullah Atal starts beautifully with a clip through mid-wicket for Afghanistan's first boundary, but he's been given out lbw two balls later.

He reviews with seconds to spare, but England have the on-field decision in their favour.

That is a consequence of the pressure that England have built up.

Afghanistan haven't played with any fluency yet. That is a big wicket, he can be very dangerous. It is a good start for England.
