  2. 'Didn't think I'd play again...'published at 19:00 British Summer Time 23 July

England spinner Liam Dawson talking to Test Match Special: "I'm a little bit tired, back into it, it's very different to domestic cricket but I think we had a decent day, we’ve got a big morning tomorrow with the new ball.

"It’s nice to get that wicket, he’s a very good player. To get that wicket was really nice and to contribute to the team. It's just the ball I try to bowl around fourth stump. I bowled my best ball and luckily he nicked it.

"You can’t compare it to domestic cricket, this is a lot different to that. I've played a bit of franchise cricket and international cricket in T20 so I know what it's about and obviously Test cricket is a little bit harder. I'm a little bit tired but big day tomorrow.

"You play in big games and accept the pressure that that brings. I think that's a big things that I've managed to learn over the years but Test cricket is completely different to any white-ball cricket. So it doesn't prepare you for that but it's nice to be back involved.

"I think the age I’ve got to, if I'm honest, I didn't think I'd play again, it's not something that I'd worry about. I just tried to enjoy my cricket which I've made pretty clear. It's cool to be back involved, I've got to try and enjoy each day I'm involved and playing for England.

"I made it clear four or five years ago that I wanted to enjoy my cricket so I never got frustrated with it. I just wanted to do the best I could for any team that I played for. It's gone fairly well and hopefully that can carry on for which ever team I'm playing for."

We're looking at a Ben Stokes who looks to be running with no pain, he's got such good rhythm. He's bowling beautifully.

England look good in the field, they look like a side that is confident. They'll be happy that India only got 264. They're a well oiled unit.

    Sir Alastair Cook
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

Ben Stokes has an ability to separate bowling and being captain, that's a really impressive skill.

India, of course, had their moments today. But Ben Stokes has a knack of popping up at the key moments.

The England skipper finished the day with 2-47.

Liam Dawson has been a standout player in county cricket, he deserves his go. You're seeing what franchise cricket can do to players. Eight years ago, he probably thought he wasn't good enough. He's toured the world and got that confidence to come in and bowl, knowing he deserves to be there.

We can sit here and compare him to Shoaib Bashir but we don't know what he would've done because he's not playing.

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

I think England are a better team with Liam Dawson in the side. On the pitches that we're seeing here in the UK and Australia, I want Liam Dawson who can bring something with the bat rather than a Shoaib Bashir. Bashir just stands on the back foot but Dawson has that experience.

  8. 'I'm not getting any younger'published at 18:45 British Summer Time 23 July

England all-rounder Liam Dawson speaking to Sky Sports: "It was good, a little bit nervous the last couple of days. Getting out there settled the nerves, and yeah, I enjoyed it.

"Our director of cricket at Hampshire pulled me aside said I might have a chance, it's a great opportunity. I've made it quite clear I thought playing Test cricket was gone at the age I am, and thankfully it went OK.

"I know a lot of the lads, that wasn't an issue at all. The buzz of a Test match is very different to a domestic game. It's a very relaxed environment. You see from the outside how they've been playing, then you come inside and it's been really good fun.

"To be me really. What you say today was what you get, not amazing but I do a job for the team.

"There's not much to work with, bit of drift, fourth stump line and pick up a wicket. I just try and land it in and around that area and natural variation takes over a bit.

"I'm not getting any younger, so just try and enjoy it and take each day as it comes."

  9. Pant's fireworks cut shortpublished at 18:39 British Summer Time 23 July

We will await an update on Rishabh Pant, who mixed moments of watchful defence with batting bombast before limping off retired hurt.

Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

Ben Stokes has been head and shoulders the best bowler for England. I look more and more at this side and on every side you need someone special, that's him. he makes them from a good team to an outstanding team. I'd like to see him get more runs on the board.

I know they'll have to face Jasprit Bumrah, he's the only person that I think will be a threat on this pitch.

    Sir Alastair Cook

Ben Stokes has been England's best bowler of this series. He's been able to bowl pain free. good pace, good rhythm, can we please have this Ben Stokes' body for the next six games.

This feels eerily similar to the last Test… maybe it’s just me?

Here's the four wickets England have managed to winkle out on an overcast day, but on a hard pitch which has looked pretty good for batting.

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

I think it's in the balance. India will be happy with the runs, England will be happy with the way they bowled. They did well in the afternoon, got the ball moving around a bit. India will probably need about 100 more but that Rishabh Pant injury is such a game changer.

  15. Postpublished at 18:26 British Summer Time 23 July

    Phil Tufnell
Former England spinner on Test Match Special

It's been a pretty even-steven day here, no one knew whether to bat or bowl first. I think England were a bit unlucky here. They beat the edge quite a few times but they need to get wickets tomorrow with the new ball.

  16. India 264-4 at stumpspublished at 18:25 British Summer Time 23 July

It's got very dark at Old Trafford.

A bit of kidology as Ben Stokes pretends he's bringing back a seamer bowler, and umpire Rod Tucker grins as he whips off the bails with a few minutes to go.

    That will be stumps.

You've got to keep your concentration up, especially in these passages. All it takes is one lapse of concentration and the next thing you're walking off.

It must be dark, Liam Dawson is bowling without his shades.

  19. Ind 264-4published at 83 overs

Ben Stokes brings up the field to Liam Dawson who dangles the carrot by tossing up one, and Ravindra Jadeja bites. However, he's sunk his teeth into this one and skipped down the pitch and biffed it over his head for four.

I think this has got the feel of, let's just get a few cheap ones in to bring the over rate up.
