As much as it was great seeing Shoaib Bashir get the last wicket in the Lord's Test, Liam Dawson seems to have the control required to pin down an end whilst also being threatening. Bashir has a future, but Dawson surely deserves a run in this team. Would prefer seeing an energy sapping 2-63 off 31 overs, than a 5-155 off 32 overs.

I think Liam Dawson has bowled well, he's certainly brought some control. I think what Ben Stokes might be enjoying is that he knows how to set a field. There's nothing better than experience for a spin bowler. He knows his game and he knows where the batsmen will be trying to send it.

Liam Dawson, stocky and sporting wrap-around sunglasses, spins one through the gate to Sai Sudharsan. In fact, the ball stayed very low and skidded through a little.

Later in the over, Sudharsan works Dawson left side for a single.

India have got to get a big score here, they can't fall short like they have before.

That's a fair precis of things, Theo.

Chris Woakes toils away outside the off stump but neither Rishabh Pant nor Sai Sudharsan are willing to indulge in anything too extravagant.

Theo: This pitch is offering very little for the bowlers and therefore no jeopardy for the batting side... pretty attritional stuff

India look very comfortable since tea. Archer and Carse the least threatening of England's bowlers. It's gone flat here and England are just allowing this to drift.

India's run-rate has increased from this morning to 3.13 per over. Brydon Carse is doing a few stretches after that over. He's got a twinge or a niggle.

Rishabh Pant has been a real thorn in England's side in this series. You've just got to get past him, haven't you?

There is method behind Pant. He might be a very good reader of how the bowler's going to bowl - being a keeper as well.

Rishabh Pant has crossed 1,000 Test runs in England. He is the sixth Indian batter to achieve the feat.

    Have a bit of that!

Rishabh Pant defends a delivery from Brydon Carse. The next ball is near identical - perhaps a fraction fuller - and he plants his front foot down the pitch and boshes Carse back over his head for six.

    Marvellous shot.

I just wonder if this partnership could be more aggressive. If both of them start to play more shots, when given the opportunity of course, they could put up a good score.

What's this partnership? 39. India are just digging themselves out of a hole.

It's one such defensive stroke from Rishabh Pant that draws an edge off a delivery from Jofra Archer, but the India batter plays it with such soft hands he could star in an advert for a moisturiser company.

The ball drops short of Zak Crawley in the three-man slip cordon.

It's a dry surface out there, cracks appearing on day one. That's more of a reason as to why you've got to score as many as you can in the first innings.

  18. Ind 179-3published at 59 overs

Rishabh Pant is so fascinating because of his unpredictability. He's the batting pinball machine, with balls flying everywhere, one moment.

The next he's a patient blocker showing classical defensive strokeplay.

It's brightening up at Old Trafford.

Pant looked to reverse sweep to a man bowling almost 90mph, and he's cross with himself that it's not gone quite how he wanted.
