You wouldn't want to face Jofra Archer when it's gloomy like this.

I think Ben Stokes will like the control that he is getting from Liam Dawson, he's keeping a lid on the scoring. He's not looked that threatening but it is a day one wicket.

  5. Ind 254-4published at 80 overs

    The new ball is due.

However, with the light an issue Ben Stokes will keep England's spinners going with the older ball.

India have not picked up any momentum this session.

I think India wouldn't want to face the new ball today so there is some conversations about the light.

Liam Dawson will be happy with his work. He's come in and done exactly what we all knew he could do anyway.

Liam Dawson continues, bowling quite flat to keep it tight.

Ravindra Jadeja pads up to one which spins big from Dawson, but it whistles pass the stumps and into the gloves of Jamie Smith.

The umpires have requested a light meter and Ben Stokes responds by bringing on Joe Root.

That was a tight, unnecessary single there.

  13. Ind 249-4published at 78 overs

A tight-ish single after Ravindra Jadeja nurdles one into the leg side and sets off.

Chris Woakes throws to the striker's end but Shardul Thakur manages to get home - his bat blocking it from hitting the stumps as he slides it over the line.

I don't like the contest being put in a worse off place with an injury like that. If someone has a bad injury, like a broken foot, just allow a sub to come in. In the first innings only though, it couldn't be later the game.

Why do they allow concussion substitutes but not broken bones subs?

  15. Ind 247-4published at 77.3 overs

If you missed it, Rishabh Pant clocked one on his foot from Chris Woakes earlier and has since retired hurt.

India will be happy with the score but they'll be thinking about Rishabh Pant. His injury will impact the outcome of this series.

  17. Ind 245-4published at 77 overs

Liam Dawson, a green stain on the back of his trousers, wheels away.

Shardul Thakur pinches the strike with a single off the last ball of that set.

Three overs until the new ball.

I can't help but feel for India here - not only coming over without Kohli, Rohit and the injured Shami, have a fairly inexperienced side, having to protect Bumrah's fitness, had non-stop injury issues during the tour, lost all four tosses and now might not have Pant for the rest of this match and have to play a batsman short.

Shardul Thakur is a natural aggressor, he'll be better off playing freely and trying to run up the score.

  20. Ind 243-4published at 76 overs

Shardul Thakur thumps one off the back foot from Ben Stokes and picks up four. England need to build some momentum into passage of the game.
