Summary

  1. Ind 5-0published at 2 overs

Jofra Archer with the second over.

He glides into the crease in that effortless manner of his, hitting the mid-80s mph as he relaxes into his first over.

KL Rahul works the ball to mid-wicket to get himself off the mark.

Two genuine edges that have both been played with soft hands. That's definitely going to cause some grumbles in the dressing room.

  4. Ind 4-0published at 1 over

Two edges in the over. Encouraging for England.

Lovely shape from Chris Woakes with his fourth delivery which draws a genuine edge from the bat of Yashasvi Jaiswal as he defends on the front foot.

The ball falls short of third slip.

A couple of deliveries later and Jaiswal prods again - albeit with soft hands - but the ball does not carry and races through the slip cordon for four.

Woakes kicks the turf in frustration.

  6. Ind 0-0published at 0.1 overs

Chris Woakes, round the wicket to Yashasvi Jaiswal, begins with a delivery which climbs into the India opener.

Liam Dawson for Shoaib Bashir is the only change to England's XI.

However, India have made three changes.

Sai Sudharsan has come in for Karun Nair at the top of the order. Shardul Thakur replaces Nitish Reddy as the all-rounder while seamer Anshul Kamboj makes his Test debut in place of Akash Deep.

Liam Dawson has done his time. He's not a bazball type of player but he's solid and has been around. He won't let you down, ball, bat or field. Really solid pick.

  12. Sliding Daws momentpublished at 10:50 British Summer Time 23 July

    Stephan Shemilt
BBC Sport chief cricket reporter at Old Trafford

Lord's has not been kind to fingers.

Steve Smith mangled his pinky in the World Test Championship final, then a rather fortuitous blow to India's Rishabh Pant meant he could bat and not keep wicket in the third Test against England last week.

Shoaib Bashir came off worse than Smith and Pant. Ravindra Jadeja's belt back at the England off-spinner resulted in surgery to Bashir's left little finger and an absence from the fourth Test at Old Trafford and the finale at The Oval next week.

One wonders about the butterfly effect caused by the swish of Jadeja's blade. England were too deep into the Bashir project to change course either in this series or the Ashes. Now they have been given an unexpected opportunity to see what they could have won with Liam Dawson.

It is, if you will pardon the pun, a sliding Daws moment.

  13. 'Good toss to lose!'published at 10:43 British Summer Time 23 July

India captain Shubman Gill: "I was a bit confused [about what to do]. The surface looks good, so a good toss to lose! It looks like a good surface. Nice and hard.

"I think we have been playing well in the last few matches. The small moments we have lost but apart from that, a number of sessions we have won more than them which is a positives for us.

"We needed a bit of break after the last Test match. All of the Test matches have been intense. It was good to regroup."

I am not quite convinced it is a bowl first situation. I looked at that surface. It's a very dry wicket and I'm not looking at there being much movement. If there's any doubt, Ben Stokes reverts to bowling. I would have batted first because if you are bowling on a flat one the bowlers are not the happiest souls.

  15. 'Pretty decent overhead conditions'published at 10:37 British Summer Time 23 July

England captain Ben Stokes: "There's pretty decent overhead conditions for bowling so that's what we're going to do."

"We've had a good break in between. It's been a good chance for everyone to go back home and rest, put their feet up then come back here."

"I think everyone left everything on the outfield at Lords on the last day. The effort has been outstanding from both teams. It improves the quality on both sides."

"Typical Manchester wicket. There's a little bit of grass on there but it's very flat."

"Forced change, Liam Dawson is back in the team. It's been a long time since his last test. He's been doing great at Hampshire and around the world where he's been playing. He deserves this chance."

Perhaps the weather will cool off tensions between the two sides.

It's a classically cloudy morning here in Manchester.

There has been the odd light sprinkling of rain this so far but, hopefully, it should not impinge upon proceedings too greatly today according to the BBC Weather forecast.

Tensions boiled over at Lord's and the 'phoney war' between England's and India's players continued this week.
