If you look at Alick Athanaze's technique, he doesn't use his feet much at all. They should keep probing away at that off stump line even if he gets a few of those drives away.

  2. WI 88-3published at 33 overs

Alick Athanaze showing further signs of picking up the pace, driving Atkinson through the covers for four.

He adds a further single to move to 23 from 54, 15 of those runs coming after lunch.

Lord's 2011 v. India. Jimmy had Tendulkar snaffled at slip down the slope. In the Mound Stand I was the only one who cheered - everyone else wanted to see Sachin bat! What a legend Jimmy is.

  4. WI 81-3published at 32 overs

Lovely ball to finish the over, Woakes just moving the ball away from Alick Athanaze's bat.

No edge though, and Jamie Smith gathers in his striking black gloves.

That is as hard as they come in the follow-through.

  6. dropped catch

Athanaze dropped on 16published at 31.4 overs

    Tough chance!

In-ducker from Chris Woakes, driven hard back at the bowler - he's just unable to hold onto the ball in his follow-through, trying to make the grab just a few inches above the ground.

One more single for Hodge from the over.

The West Indies have scored 19 runs from the first three overs after lunch, having scored just 45 in the 26 before the interval.

    A change of intent?

  8. 6 runs

    WI 79-3published at 30.4 overs

    Hooked for six!

89 mph delivery from Atkinson, which Kavem Hodge top-edges as he tries to play the hook on the swivel.

The ball flies away over the boundary at fine leg.

Alick Athanaze is looking for that drive, looking to get on the front foot. England will feel they're in the game with him playing shots like that.

It was a terrific dive from Shoaib Bashir, if rather enthusiastic.

Lovely shot though, nothing more than a simple push down the ground.

  11. WI 73-3published at 30 overs

Alick Athanaze punches the ball back past Chris Woakes. Shoaib Bashir gives chase from mid-off and puts in a dive when, frankly, it's far too late from to retrieve the ball - he comes to a stop a few feet short of the boundary, which the ball had long since crossed.

Another four comes from the following delivery, on the drive again but slightly wider this time.

There aren't too many people that I'm in awe of, but Courtney Walsh and Curtly Ambrose are up there for me. They were generational fast bowlers.

  13. How's stat?!published at 13:48 British Summer Time 10 July

Gus Atkinson's first over was the second-fastest first over by an England bowler in Test cricket since records were taken. He averaged 87.86mph, second only to Steven Finn's 88.73. Mark Wood's in third with 87.78.

  14. WI 65-3published at 29 overs

No further runs from the over, as Gus Atkinson returns to his parsimonious start to Test cricket.

Gus Atkinson isn't express pace, but he's got enough there to hurry the batsmen.

  16. WI 65-3published at 28.1 overs

Bit of a loose delivery from Atkinson first up, and Kavem Hodge pulls the bouncer away for four through square.

That trebles the number of runs Atkinson has conceded in Test cricket, he took 2-2 from five overs before lunch.

It's a bat first pitch, it looked quite dry. But the overheads, the floodlights, the humidity, it was all crying out for whoever won the toss to bowl first.

The players are out after what was no doubt a splendid lunch in the Lord's pavilion.

Gus Atkinson will resume for England.

To save you wondering, while it's overcast at Lord's, there's no rain forecast so we should have a full day today.

It's mostly certainly bowler-friendly conditions, there was no surprise when England chose to bowl this morning.

If there's any West Indies fans looking for some solace after a rather slow-scoring opening session, you can at least enjoy this six from debutant Mikyle Louis.

The first cricketer from St Kitts to play for the West Indies - he only made his first-class debut in February, and now he's hitting sixes on cricket's greatest stage.
