For England to win the Ashes do we just need to have a bowling attack of debutants each match?

A day to remember. We thought it was going to be all about Jimmy Anderson but he's the only bowler to be wicketless in the innings!

  3. WI 107-9published at 39 overs

Seales manages to take a single to long leg to move West Indies to 107-9.

They've slipped from 88-3 to 107-9 over the space of five overs - and 16 of those 19 runs came in over, as Alzarri Joseph raged against the storm.

If Gus Atkinson takes one more wicket or keeps his runs conceded to below 43, he will have the best figures on Test debut by an Englishman.

Dominic Cork took 7-43, also against the West Indies, in 1995.

It might take us an hour just to explain that dismissal. He was down on one knee, swiping to the leg side, it's somehow gone to point.

Gus Atkinson looks like he's going to take a wicket with every ball at the moment.

    Make that seven!

Shamar Joseph departs for a two-ball duck after playing a bizarre short to England's new tyro. He's down one knee, trying to play to leg but manages to sky the ball to Ollie Pope at point.

Jayden Seales is last man in.

It was a very encouraging start from the West Indies. Louis, Athanaze and Hodge all made promising starts.

But it has been a complete nightmare since lunch.

That went miles in the air. It might've been a slower ball from Atkinson.

Test cricket is easy, isn't it?

  10. wicket

    Joseph c Woakes b Atkinson 17 (WI 106-8)

    It's six for Atkinson!

Joseph tries to loft him down the ground but is through the shot too quickly, the delivery striking the bat on the splice.

The ball flies in the air and Chris Woakes runs forward from mid-on and takes the catch level with the non-striker.

Quite a cameo from Alzarri Joseph.

West Indies have got to try and get a partnership from somewhere but I'm not sure where it's going to come from. It's only going to get easier to bat on.

  12. WI 106-7published at 38 overs

Just a run-of-the-mill two-single over from Chris Woakes.

This isn't what I signed up for.

You can't take your eyes off this! Three wickets in his last over, four fours from his next.

  15. WI 104-7published at 37 overs

And a fourth four from the over!

Lifted over extra cover to move to 16 from seven deliveries.

Atkinson currently has figures of 5-36, 16 of those runs from this over.

Oliver: The special moments from Atkinson, Brook and Pope today are no coincidence. This England team runs on huge confidence and positive energy, created by Stokes and McCullum. That creates the perfect environment for the players to pull these things off.

Alzarri Joseph fancies himself as a batter. He has a Test best of 86.

He has started his innings like a true West Indies showman.

  18. WI 100-4published at 36.4 overs

And now a defiant Alzarri Joseph strikes back!

Three consecutive fours from the 27-year-old, twice working the ball into leg side and then playing a lovely classical drive through the covers.

    That's the hundred up.

Want to know more about Gus Atkinson? We have you covered.

Our very own Sam Drury penned this piece last summer.

BBC London cricket commentator Mark Church has seen plenty of Atkinson in action for Surrey, saying: "His bouncer is rapid and he hurries batters up with genuine pace.

"That is what everyone is looking for, that point of difference. He's a real talent."
