That went so fast and low. It went like a rocket - Stokes deserves that, he's toiled all morning.

Louis has played nicely but that is wonderful cricket. Stokes has been bowling well for Durham all summer. When he's bowling, he makes England a better team by as much as 20%. He's a wicket-taker.

  3. wicket

    Louis c Brook b Stokes 27 (WI 44-3)

The pressure tells, and it's Harry Brook with an absolute stunner!

It's a catch that Ben Stokes himself would be pretty proud of. Mikyle Louis was doing so well, playing the ball late and into the ground, but this one just bounces a little more and catches him higher on the bat.

It just carries to Brook at second slip, who dives full-length to his right and plucks the ball millimetres off the ground in his fingertips.

    A beauty.

Too many Jimmy memories. The Kohli golden in 2021 was amazing, as I was sat with an India fan who had been telling me all morning how much he was looking forward to seeing Kohli bat. However, Edgbaston 2009 day two will always be my favourite. As a teenager and having been snuck into the ground by my Dad, who was working the game at the time, he ripped through the Aussie middle order to a roar of the ground I’ve very rarely heard since. Simply, the greatest to ever do it.

    Rinse and repeat.

I looked for England bowlers who took two wickets before conceding a run in Test cricket. There was just one, who made his debut against Zimbabwe 21 years ago... not Jimmy, but Richard Johnson, who took two wickets in his first over.

  7. WI 44-2published at 20 overs

The ball is hooping all over the place with Stokes in full flow.

Mikyle Louis gets a streaky boundary off the edge for the only runs off the over.

A real Test cricket battle. Love to see it.

The West Indies were 16-0 after the first two overs. Since then just 24 runs in 16 overs, and since Louis hit that six in the 10th over it's just six runs in eight overs for the loss of two wickets.

  9. WI 40-2published at 19 overs

    Pressure, pressure, pressure.

Another maiden from Gus Atkinson - and here's his second wicket from earlier.

Ah, it's good to see Stokes bowling again.

He tests Alick Athanaze with a probing maiden. It's very grey and cloudy in London and the ball seems to be doing quite a lot more. This'll be a test for this West Indies pair to see it through until lunch.

  11. WI 40-2published at 17 overs

Athanaze drives through the covers as Atkinson concedes his first runs from his fourth over.

Ruined his figures. He now has 2-2.

It's good to see Stokes bowling, when England have that fourth seamer it just makes the attack look so much better.

  13. WI 38-2published at 16 overs

Alick Athanaze is in at four, and he looked impressive when I saw him play in the white-ball series out in the Caribbean at the end of 2023.

A leg bye from a ball searing down the leg side is the only blemish from Stokes' second over as West Indies look to rebuild after Atkinson's two quick wickets.

5th August 2021. England v India at Trent Bridge. Jimmy kindly provided the greatest hangover cure by bowling Virat Kohli for a golden duck on the morning of day 2. He has lifted me out of my seat with joy more countless times. Thank you Jimmy.

You hardly see Kirk McKenzie go so long without trying to get bat on ball, he's on 1 from 14. Less composure than previous deliveries, he just wanted to score.

    Atkinson has his second!

The extra pace is doing the trick here. A fuller delivery tempts Kirk McKenzie, who was struggling for rhythm, and he's drawn into a big drive outside off stump.

It flies quickly to Zak Crawley at second slip, who takes a smart catch with the ball around head height.

The perfect start for England after drinks.

It's been a very good hour for the West Indies. If you'd offered them 36-1 in these conditions, they'd have taken it. But England will know the ball will do more in the next hour, and the wicket looks an absolute belter.

  20. drinks break

    WI 36-1published at 14 overs

A steady start, just the one from it.

Makes such a big difference for England when Stokes can operate fully as the fourth seamer.

Time for a drink after a pretty even start.
