Big moment - one of many we've had in this first hour, granted.

Ben Stokes, finally fit enough to play as a proper all-rounder, replaces Chris Woakes.

You can anticipate pace, but it's the adrenaline and decision making that pace causes. You can get so pumped up you can get dragged into shots you don't want to play.

  3. WI 35-1published at 13 overs

    Two maidens, one wicket.

Pretty easy, this Test cricket stuff, according to Gus Atkinson.

Our new baby boy arrived last Friday so one of my favourite Jimmy memories will now be nesting at home following this very special Test with him in his first week. I’ve already told him all about the wonder that is Jimmy - we’re hoping he might decide to follow in his footsteps one day!

McKenzie solidly defends the rest of the over.

Having lost the toss, and given the conditions were in England's favour, it has been a pretty solid start from the West Indies batters.

Mikyle Louis has played some wonderful shots.

A lovely delivery from Chris Woakes. Just left Louis down the slope.

  8. West Indies reviewpublished at 11.1 overs

    Another?!

Chris Woakes joins the party with a stunner that nips past Mikyle Louis' defence.

Woakes and keeper Jamie Smith both go straight up and it's given, but the batter shakes his head and immediately reviews.

  9. WI 34-1published at 11 overs

Left-hander Kirk McKenzie is in at three for the West Indies and he solidly defends the rest of the Atkinson over.

What a dream start for the Surrey man!

Brathwaite's hands were far away from his body, feet were nowhere, and he just chopped on.

Gus Atkinson, quite literally taking over from James Anderson and needing only two deliveries to take his first Test wicket. I know pace isn't everything, but that does encapsulate one of the things England are trying to achieve with the changes to the Test team. It's been largely early 80s from Anderson and Woakes, and the Windies have been comfortable. Atkinson hit 89mph with his first ball, then induced the mistake with a second ball that was 88mph.

It's all been about Jimmy Anderson this morning, but Gus Atkinson, second ball in Test cricket and he gets the wicket. It's nipped back down the slope, 88mph, not a great shot from Kraigg Brathwaite.

    Brathwaite b Atkinson 6 (WI 34-1)

    And he strikes second ball!

It's a poor dismissal for Brathwaite but elation for Gus Atkinson, who is embraced by his team-mates and roared by the Lord's crowd.

It's wide outside off stump, and the West Indies skipper can't resist going for a big drive. He gets an inside edge back on to his stumps, and the slow trudge back to the pavilion tells you all you need to know about his feelings towards that shot.

Woakes went a little bit straighter and it didn't swing. A beautiful shot, all the timing - he's a big lad and he's got the power, but that looked effortless.

Hello! What a shot that is!

Chris Woakes bowls some more leg stump filth, but Mikyle Louis lofts it over square leg for six with the most elegant one-legged flick.

Jimmy's best hairstyles could be a whole other discussion in itself!

Mikyle Louis ends the over with a very streaky edge past the stumps for a single and through his legs for a single.

More close calls for the West Indies.

I’ve followed Jimmy's career from the early days at Lancs and I will forever remember being in the car listening to the radio back in 2003 when he took a World Cup hat-trick against Pakistan and wanting to get a red streaked faux hawk haircut. Many more wonderful memories with the red ball. Thank you Jimmy.

    Oooft, that's a beauty.

Chris Woakes finds some late movement to beat Brathwaite's outside edge.

A brilliant start for the West Indies. The ball hasn't done as much as we thought it would do with the overhead conditions. The Dukes ball can take a while to swing, while it still has the lacquer. It can take eight or nine overs before it starts to hoop.
