Jimmy Anderson has pulled his length back, and is trying to angle it in to the right hander, rather than looking for the fuller ball to take an edge.

  2. WI 24-0published at 7 overs

And there's the Anderson swing! He gets one to nip back in through Brathwaite's defences and just bounces over off stump.

He's certainly looked the more threatening of the two bowlers so far.

James Anderson has bowled more maidens in his international career than Phillip DeFreitas bowled overs in his - and he played 44 Tests.

  4. WI 22-0published at 6 overs

    Have some of that.

Chris Woakes ties Mikyle Louis down with five dots before gifting him a short, wide one outside off stump that the batter willingly crashes for four.

Mitchell Johnson - “why you chirping now mate you’re not getting any wickets?” Anderson’s response to this has got to be my favourite moment of his.

Mikyle Louis hadn't played first-class cricket before this year, and had a superb season in the West Indies domestic competition.

In contrast, James Anderson played with Alec Stewart, who made his first-class debut in 1981.

Anderson's career has been across a huge span of years.

  7. WI 18-0published at 5 overs

Another metronomic over ticks by from Anderson, just one from it.

After a pretty quick start, both Brathwaite and Louis have been watchful. This boundary from Louis in the first over has been the highlight so far.

James Anderson's first Test wicket for England v Zimbabwe

I skipped a day off school to go and watch my first Test with my dad and sister. The year was 2003 and it was England Vs Zimbabwe. I can remember asking my dad if we could leave as it was miserable. My dad wouldn't budge and thank goodness as it meant we witnessed Jimmy's first wicket in Test cricket! Something we've told countless people that we saw his first wicket. I was 12 then and I'm 33 now! Thank you for the memories, Jimmy!

  9. WI 17-0published at 4 overs

There's an overly optimistic lbw shout from Chris Woakes, with the ball firing way past leg stump.

He then fires another one way down the leg side, which forces young Jamie Smith into action with a full-length dive. Side note - black wicketkeeping gloves in Test cricket? Unsure.

Watch the emotional moment before play began of Anderson's family ringing the bell at Lord's.

The thing about that first Anderson over was the quiet that surrounded Lord's for his first delivery. Pindrop stuff. The other notable feature? That Mikyle Louis drive. Stunning way to start your Test debut.

Chris Watkins: This is a really sad day. Be brilliant Jimmy - make them regret it.

Simon Mahon: If you were at Lord's today then you'd be buzzing to see that England have chosen to bowl first. Must feel electrifying to get to watch Anderson bowl in a Test match for one final time

  14. WI 16-0published at 2 overs

Four more, as Woakes drifts down the leg side and it glances off Brathwaite's pads for four leg byes.

Not the most disciplined start from England.

Another familiar face to share the new ball with Anderson.

Chris Woakes, Ashes hero, is greeted by a clip into the leg side for two by Kraigg Brathwaite.

It does feel a bit weird thinking about an England Test team without Jimmy Anderson in it.

Genuinely, as dramatic as it sounds, I can't remember life without him there - I got properly into cricket after the 2009 Ashes, watching his batting heroics with Monty Panesar in my hometown of Cardiff.

Since then, I've done my GCSEs, finished school and university, bought a house, got married - as Stephan Shemilt writes, "athletes and players become major characters in our existence".

I think it might be a little bit slow, this Lord's pitch. Probably better for bowling and batting on day two, but England certainly have got the conditions.

    Louis hits Anderson for four

Mikyle Louis is off the mark in Test cricket with a dab past the slips for four. It wasn't full controlled but he did well to play late, ensuring it wouldn't carry to the fielder.

Plenty of control in the next one, though. Beautifully timed past mid-off for a classy boundary, and Anderson can only shrug in reply.

A positive start for the visitors.

Odd mix of emotions for this Test match. Sadness at one of the all time greats bowing out, but optimism that this English side is on the up and with a lot of young talent coming through. Thank you Jimmy for countless memories over the years.

A prod into the covers for a single from Brathwaite ensures a gentle start to proceedings after all the emotion and the build-up.

    And breathe.
