Joe Root's favourite shot. It's a long way down to that third man boundary but he's found it.

First boundary for Joe Root, unleashing his cut shot to Jayden Seales and sending the ball through the gap between the slips and backward point.

    No stopping that.

That is absolutely in Crawley's arc. He hit it hard.

  4. Eng 130-2published at 28 overs

Alzarri Joseph offers too much width to Zak Crawley and the England opener doesn't need asking twice - he unfurls a mighty drive to send the ball to the cover boundary.

A further single moves him to 59.

Jason Holder liked to wear the number eight but when he got into the West Indies team it wasn't available so he took 98.

He eventually got the opportunity to wear eight but got no runs and no wickets so he's back with 98.

Do you think we'd have a new nightwatchman tonight, in the form of James Anderson?

  7. Eng 125-2published at 27 overs

In comes Root, to the customary low intonation of his name from the crowd.

He gets off the mark with a nudge to mid-on.

    Pope lbw b Holder 57 (Eng 123-2)

Nothing on Snicko, ball tracking all red - that's bad news for Ollie Pope, he has to troop off.

It was a decent yorker from Holder, beating the England batter for pace as he tried to turn the ball square. Pope jammed his bat down and perhaps thought contact with the pitch was a touch on the ball, but no luck.

Holder deserves a wicket - he's bowled well.

He's looking at the toe of his bat as though he got a feather on it.

  11. Umpire reviewpublished at 26.3 overs

Jason Holder hits Ollie Pope on the pads and the finger goes up.

The England batter is going to review - maybe a touch of bat?

He'd moved England into the lead from the previous delivery, working Holder through mid-wicket for four.

West Indies need to try the bouncer tactic - the ball is doing nothing and the scoreboard is racing along. They need to think outside the box.

  13. 50 runs

50 for Zak Crawleypublished at 26 overs

    Eng 117-1

    And Zak Crawley follows.

He reaches the milestone from 74 balls and England are just two runs behind West Indies' first innings now.

It has been an eye-catching partnership between these two.

Ollie Pope needed that. It's a good start to his summer and he's on his way.

  15. 50 runs

50 for Ollie Popepublished at 25.5 overs

    Eng 116-1

West Indies turn back to Alzarri Joseph in search of a much-needed breakthrough.

But it's just more of the same from England, as Ollie Pope drills another past point to bring up a fine half-century from 70 balls.

A classy innings from England's number three to start his Test summer in style.

  16. Eng 108-1published at 25 overs

Zak Crawley leaves one alone outside off stump on 49.

    Are you OK, Zak?

Abinsash: I do not want to jump the gun or sound over-enthusiastic but this match is positioning perfectly for Jimmy Anderson's farewell as huge runs on the board would amplify his artistry with the red cherry.

That was glorious - he used the top hand and the pace of the bowler to glide it up to the rope. It's becoming all too easy for England.

  19. Eng 107-1published at 24 overs

My word, we've been treated to some Zak Crawley magic today.

Shamar Joseph is torn, because he has to bowl full to create wicket chances but it just brings Crawley's cover drives into the game.

More impeccable timing brings him four more, followed by a couple through mid-wicket to take him to 49.

That is the zone that Jason Holder can find and as a batter it is a hard delivery to face because of the height he bowls from.

Zak Crawley was just a bit too static.
