Summary

  1. Eng 96-1published at 23 overs

Edged... but safe. Zak Crawley with another flashing drive that evades the diving fielder at slip.

Needs to get the feet moving again after the bad light delay.

I've liked Ollie Pope's energy. Sometimes early in his innings he can be too loose but today he has been in control of his shots.

  3. Eng 92-1published at 22 overs

In the blink of an eye, England are just 29 behind.

It's not quite been their usual 'Bazball' style, but the running between the wickets has been immaculate between these two. It's stopped West Indies from building any pressure at all.

  4. Eng 90-1published at 21 overs

Still no luck for Jason Holder. It's still gloomy, it's swinging, but the breakthrough isn't coming.

  5. Eng 88-1published at 20 overs

England are racing towards a lead.

If you're just finishing work and joining us, you've missed an eventful day. Gus Atkinson took seven wickets on his Test debut as West Indies were skittled for 121. Three of them came in one over, as you can watch here.

It's a precarious situation for the West Indies. They need to strike because England have made a terrific start with the bat.

The scoreboard is ticking over quickly as you'd expect from the Bazballers.

  7. Eng 88-1published at 19.1 overs

Shamar Joseph resumes, with Ollie Pope playing and missing at his first ball outside off stump.

    Steady on, Ollie.

    We're back!

The players have emerged as common sense finally prevails.

  9. Postpublished at 17:10 British Summer Time 10 July

Nine fours in Ollie Pope's 42 from 43 balls so far.

    He's looked in sparkling form.

Both umpires are having a chat in the middle, pointing to the sky, with the occasional glance at the light meter.

One of the most frustrating things about cricket, surely?

This wicket is a belter. It's only the overhead conditions making it tricky.

If the sun was out, you'd love to bat on it.

    Sigh.

There is one dark, troublesome cloud overhead but I'm hoping (!) that they'll get back out there sharpish once that blows over.

The West Indies players are still on the field, they want to carry on. They've been agonisingly close to a couple of breakthroughs, so can't blame them.

There is no reason the West Indies would want to bowl spin when the ball is swinging so much.

But there is a full house at Lord's and it's not that dark.

    Off we go.

Ollie Pope and Zak Crawley have both survived lbw scares, but are going along at a very good rate. Pope has 42, Crawley has 38.

  15. Eng 88-1published at 19 overs

More discussions between the umpires now, as the light is getting worse.

It's the angle that Jason Holder comes in at from wide of the crease, it was going on to miss leg stump by quite some way.

He's got his hands on his hips because he can't believe it.

  17. Not outpublished at 18.5 overs

    Missing leg stump again!

Nothing is going Jason Holder's way. He's bowling so well.

    Jason Holder is convinced.

  19. West Indies reviewpublished at 18.5 overs

This looks very similar to the Pope one from earlier, except it's given not out this time.

Jason Holder convinces his captain to send it upstairs.

The lacquer is fully off the ball now and it's swinging properly. With the dark clouds and the lights on, this is an opportunity for the West Indies.

The umpires were talking about the light but I think the right decision was to stay on. Once this dark cloud passes, it should be OK.
