Summary

  1. WI 57-3published at 21 overs

Bashir is looking threatening with every delivery. He is a smiling assassin.

Bashir has started well this morning. It was a good captaincy decision by Ben Stokes.

He looks remarkably confident. The way he interacts with people and stands at the bottom of his mark, there's just something confident about him.

  3. dropped catch

Dropped catch. Sort of (again)published at 11:29 British Summer Time 28 July

Kavem Hodge nicks his first ball but it flies between Jamie Smith and Joe Root, who is positioned at more of a one-and-a-half slips. It runs away for four.

It didn't feel like the logical decision to start with Bashir this morning but he's got the wicket. There's a little bit of grip there for him.

  5. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 20.4 overs

    Athanaze lbw b Bashir 12 (WI 53-3)

Got him. Told you it wasn't respite!

Bashir, from around the wicket, bowls one a touch quicker. Alick Athanaze was down sweeping but it was too sharp for him. They thought about a review for a while, but then decided it wasn't worth it.

That would have been a fabulous catch, it went so fast to him.

  7. WI 53-2published at 20 overs

Wood bowling wheels here. I would say that facing Bashir is a little respite, but that wouldn't be true.

  8. dropped catch

Athanaze dropped on eightpublished at 11:24 British Summer Time 28 July

Harry Brook slams his hands on the ground. Athanaze cuts a Wood fizzer that is tight at his body. Brook, at third slip, gets two hands on it, but it was travelling. Properly travelling. Feels harsh to call it a drop.

  9. WI 47-2published at 19 overs

Neither of these two look particularly comfortable against Bashir.

There is a little bit of turn and bounce for Shoaib Bashir. He'll be encouraged by what he's seen so far.

  11. dropped catch

Dropped catch (well, not really, but a chance)published at 18.1 overs

Bashir gets more turn and bounce. The ball strikes Louis' pad and bat, before flying off just out of Ollie Pope's reach.

Brian Lara was at Edgbaston yesterday signing copies of his new book. There's plenty of reminders around the ground of the 501* he made for Warwickshire just over 30 years ago.

Like many people, I can remember checking the scorecard from the match on Ceefax, and not being quite sure if there had been an error of some sort.

  14. WI 46-2published at 18 overs

Mikyle Louis' turn to play the short ball badly. Didn't pick up the length of the penultimate ball of Wood's over and it hit the splice of his willow. Leg slip is in place, by the way.

  15. WI 44-2published at 17 overs

WI trail by 50. Slowly, slowly. I wonder if Bashir will bowl all day from one end while the seamers rotate around him (not literally). That would be fun.

Sourdough, Tim? Has to be these days.

I happen to be staying in the same Birmingham city centre hotel as the England players along with the rest of the BBC TMS gang. We saw Shoaib Bashir at breakfast heartily tucking into some scrambled eggs on toast. He'll need the energy as he'll have plenty of bowling to do today.

  18. WI 40-2published at 16.3 overs

More turn from Bashir. Mikyle Louis jabs bat and pad down, before Ollie Pope half appeals for a catch a short-leg. Crowd were excited.

Fiery start from Wood. Six balls north of 90mph - just getting warmed-up(!) - including one that Alick Athanaze ducked into. He will have a bruised shoulder tomorrow.

  20. WI 39-2published at 15 overs

Little bit of turn for Bashir. But no real scares for the West Indies. It's a start.

No surprise to see Mark Wood starting us off from the other end.
