It hit him in line and looks like might be clipping or just outside off stump.

  2. England reviewpublished at 12.2 overs

Next ball Marcus Stoinis attempts to reverse sweep Liam Livingstone and is struck on the pad.

    Given not out. England review.

  3. 6 runs

    Aus 132-3published at 12.1 overs

Marcus Stoinis is an imposing figure at the crease. He uses his long levers to biff Liam Livingstone over his head for six.

  4. Aus 126-3published at 12 overs

Clever bowling from Adil Rashid as England attempt to claw themselves back into the game.

Marcus Stoinis pokes nervously at one from the leg-spinner but it just drops short of the diving Rashid, who has flummoxed the Aussie middle-order batter with subtle changes of pace.

Five singles off the over. It was, however, carnage a little earlier...

That was a very good over from Liam Livingstone given the carnage that preceded it.

  6. Aus 121-3published at 11 overs

Liam Livingstone concedes just four off his first over and has a wicket to boo. A handy change by Phil Salt.

  7. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 10.2 overs

    Short c Curran b Livingstone 41 (Aus 118-2)

An impressive knock from Matthew Short comes to an end.

A slog sweep from Short but he does not quite find the middle of his bat to leg-break from Liam Livingstone and cannot get the distance.

Sam Curran has plenty to do at deep square but judges the catch well, tumbling forward to get his hands underneath it.

  8. Postpublished at 19:32 British Summer Time 11 September

    Geoff Lemon
Test Match Special commentator on BBC Sounds

Matt Short coming into the side ahead of Jake Fraser-McGurk was an interesting selection call but he is vindicating it so far.

  9. How's stat?!published at 19:31 British Summer Time 11 September

    Andy Zaltzman
    Statistician on Test Match Special

The 86 runs scored by Australia in the first five overs is the most England have conceded in the powerplay when bowling first in a T20 international.

  10. drinks break

Australia 118-2 at drinkspublished at 10 overs

A short drinks break in Southampton. Cups of tea would be welcome as the temperature drops now the sun has gone down.

Saying the tail starts with Bethell at five is incredibly harsh. What are England meant to do with older players coming to the end of their careers? Better to give some deserving talent a go methinks

Re Chris Mitchell (19:20), Bethell is not part of the tail. Been excellent for the Bears in the Blast with the bat, made 50 off 16 against Northants earlier in the year. Plus, did so well for the u19s at the last World Cup. I thought I was negative!

  12. Aus 118-2published at 10 overs

Jacob Bethell continues as Phil Salt persists with spin as he attempts to put something in the spokes of Australia's freewheeling top-order batting.

Matthew Short seems content enough to work Bethell around before crashing the left-arm spinner through the covers for four off the penultimate ball of the over.

Mitchell Marsh's team could be on for something special here, and they've got form in this part of the world. The highest T20 score at this venue was 248-6 back in 2013, when the Aussies smashed the hosts thanks to Aaron Finch's iconic 156 (63).

  14. Aus 108-2published at 9 overs

"Oh wow" barks Phil Salt to Adil Rashid after a delivery skips on to Josh Inglis who punches it down the ground for a single. England's stand-in skipper trying to create a bit of theatre, and uncertainty, out in the middle.

Inglis is not ruffled, though. A couple of balls later Rashid tosses one up and Inglis skips down the pitch and confidently hits the England leg-spinner for four.

    Ebony Rainford-Brent
Former England batter on BBC 5 Live

This is the first time this summer that England look like they are being bullied.

It shows that things go up a notch when Australia are in town.

  16. Aus 101-2published at 8 overs

Jacob Bethell, chewing gum with bleach-blonde hair fashionably shaved at the sides, does not look someone short on confidence.

He starts the over impressively but Matthew Short drives him through point then pulls him through long on for back-to-back fours.

Chris Mitchell: This is an utter mismatch. Possibly the worst England white ball XI in living memory being totally exposed. And to think, the bowling is meant to the strength of this side considering the tail starts with Bethell at five.

  18. Aus 91-2published at 7 overs

Jacob Bethell, on debut, into the attack for England.

    He bowls left-arm spin.

  19. Postpublished at 19:19 British Summer Time 11 September

    Michael Carberry
Former England batter on BBC 5 Live

Brave piece of bowling from Rashid. He was prepared to throw the ball up and give it a chance to spin. But Mitchell Marsh has just played all around it. It didn't really do much, just skidded on.

  20. wicket

    Marsh b Rashid 2 (Aus 89-2)

    Got 'im!

It's full from Adil Rashid and Australia skipper Mitchell Marsh lashes at a delivery which he expects to turn away, but in fact goes on straight with the arm.
