Australia skipper Mitchell Marsh: "It was pretty exciting watching Travis Head and Matthew Short and we certainly looked on course for 200 but did our best to stuff it up, so it's nice to start the series with a win. I thought we made use of the conditions in the powerplay and it is a great win.

"We're lucky to have guys like Adam Zampa and Josh Hazlewood in our team, especially for some of our younger guys to learn from. I went back to them and they both applied the pressure when needed."

On Xavier Bartlett's injury: "It's disappointing. I think he's hurt his thigh. It's always disappointing to see a young fellow go down but hopefully it's not too bad."

There were some poor shots from the England batters but there was also some fantastic fielding.

More from player of the match Travis Head on his impressive form: "I do what the coach and captain want. There's a bit of luck but I have worked extremely hard over time to play freer. I'd love to go out and whack it every time but I know that's not the case.

"I am in a nice bit of form and want to continue that as a batter. I could have easily played this way and missed a couple of times and been out. The freedom that I'm given, hopefully I can do that role more often than not."

England captain Phil Salt: "Everything was good apart from the result. They played well. Travis Head came out swinging in the powerplay and gave them a head start. We dragged it back in the middle but we were a couple of wickets too far down at the end.

"Travis has done that all over the place for a couple of years so we were very aware of what he can do. When the ball starts flying like that it is all about how to shut him down. Maybe we could have done a bit better but it has given something to get clarity on in the next game.

On the performance of Livingstone and Rashid: "They were brilliant. Bethell as well, he looked like he had been there a million times before, so a real positive.

"Australia did bowl well. At times we could have taken partnerships deeper. We have had a good look at them now so if we can extend those partnerships we can put ourselves into some really dangerous positions for the rest of the series."

Player of the match Travis Head: "It was a nice start. Nice to get under way. England bowled well at the start and in the first few overs it was nice to get one away. To set a platform like that with the hitters we had behind us...it was nice to do the job.

"I just tried to acclimate to a pitch with a bit of pace in it. The pitches in Scotland were a lot different. For me it was about using the pace well which I think I did. Matthew Short got off to a cracking start in the first few overs and we matched well together. Nice to get that partnership going and starting the series well."

Australia's bowlers did a good job but that was a pretty desultory from England's batters. Nobody really fired for them.

Australia have had six different wicket takers in a T20 international. They didn't have that for six years but it happened in the second match against Scotland as well here so two in a week.

Australia win by 28 runspublished at 22:14 British Summer Time 11 September

That is a truly dominant performance from Australia and a harsh lesson for a young England team.

They go 1-0 up in the three-match T20 series, with the second match at Cardiff on Friday.

If some of the more inexperienced England players were not aware of the levels required for international cricket, they do now.

Travis Head has been the difference tonight with a masterclass in powerplay batting. Those last 10 balls of his innings he went berserk.

I think it's actually lesson for any opening batters because he didn't get off to big start but didn't panic. It shows what can be done by hanging in there because you only need that one over.

Three singles and a no ball follow but it all feels academic. The energy fizzled out from this game a while ago.
