That was a hideous innings by Lawrence. The Bazball influence at its worst. He's a much better player than that.

It was coming. That was a tough watch for me.

It will be interesting to see what they are going to do with Dan Lawrence.

Dan Lawrence punches his bat with frustration.

He was looking to be aggressive, looking to repeat his six and England are in a bit of trouble now.

But now Lawrence has to go!

His cavalier innings comes to an end, attempting another big shot to Kumara and edging behind to Dinesh Chandimal.

Is that the last we'll see of Dan Lawrence batting for this England Test side? Most probably as an opener, at least...

    Four more!

Smashes it gloriously, what a marvellous shot that is.

Dan Lawrence may not have the technique but he has a way of hitting the ball and it still goes a long way.

    Eng 51-2published at 10.3 overs

Well, Lawrence might be playing rather frantically, but it doesn't mean it can't be fun at times.

He absolutely carts Asitha Fernando over the covers for six.

  15. Eng 43-2published at 10 overs

Root gets off the mark, knocking Kumara's ball to mid-on and picking up two.

He follows up with a lovely controlled pull shot, just helping the ball on its way to the boundary for a first four.

Sri Lanka have bowled much better in this second over.

These are the lines and lengths that they needed in the first innings in those conditions.

Dan Lawrence is playing aggressive shots that aren't in favour of England.

He looks like he's playing to try and prove something, it's just about getting his game organised.

  19. Eng 37-2published at 9 overs

    And we're away!

Lawrence guides Asitha down to third for two to get England under way after lunch.

The Sri Lanka batter then whistles an outswinger past Lawrence's outside edge, and the England batter responds by stepping elaborately across his stumps to the following delivery, attempting a leg side hoik.

The ball passes behind Lawrence, scudding just over middle stump.

Curious shot, Lawrence a lucky boy.

  20. Eng 35-2published at 8 overs

    Lawrence 20, Root 0

Right then, time to get going.

Or maybe not, Asitha Fernando pulls out of bowling to Dan Lawrence at the point of delivery.

    Any time now...
