Surely this has been the ugliest England display of the Bazball era. The players don't seem to give the impression that they are enjoying their cricket which isn't super professional. Sri Lanka deserve to get something out of the series and perhaps they will?

    Sir Alastair Cook
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

I don't think anyone can quite believe it.

Sri Lanka have bowled brilliantly, the difference between this and the previous innings is incredible.

  9. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 16.3 overs

    Brook lbw b V Fernando 3 (Eng 69-5)

Like Root before him, Brook is walking off before we even get to ball tracking.

Lovely delivery from Vishwa Fernando, beats the attempted drive from Brook and thuds into the pads.

England lead by just 131 and we're into the tail. Sri Lanka are in this.

Sri Lanka have got some catching up to do with no spinners.

  14. Eng 67-4published at 15 overs

In comes Jamie Smith on his home ground, and he gets off the mark with a single into the leg side.

Incidentally, Root had started that over with a cover drive for four, taking him past Kumar Sangakkara's to become the sixth highest run scorer in Test cricket with 12,402.

    And no more than that.

Joe Root is often the man who guides England through these situations.

Now Sri Lanka have got him, it's down to the youngsters.

  17. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 14.3 overs

    Root lbw b A Fernando 12 (Eng 66-4)

    Nothing on the bat there!

Hit on the boot, right in front of the stumps, while trying to turn the ball to leg.

Root walks off before we get ball tracking, which confirms his dismissal when it does arrive.

England 66-4, a lead of 128 - this game is most definitely in the balance.
