Summary

  1. Sri Lanka favourites despite Smith's impressive knockpublished at 19:17 British Summer Time 8 September

At the end of day three, Sri Lanka are big favourites to win this Test. England are telling themselves anything can happen and they will return tomorrow hunting wickets.

We'll be back at 10:30 BST to see if anything dramatic can happen too.

In the meantime you can read Stephan Shemilt's match report or scroll down for the best clips and reaction.

  2. 'Easy' to say England have been complacentpublished at 19:17 British Summer Time 8 September

More from Paul Collingwood, asked if England have been complacent, he said: "It’s always easy to resort to that kind of language. These guys want to show their strengths, the enjoyment is there in the dressing room as it has been all summer. It hasn't been one of our best days but we’ll come out again tomorrow."

His message ahead of tomorrows game: "We'll stay consistent, we believe that we can go out there and compete. There's still plenty of movement in the pitch still."

  3. 'Credit Lawrence for his bravery'published at 19:16 British Summer Time 8 September

England assistant coach Paul Collingwood, speaking to TMS: "It certainly hasn't been our best day if the summer. We’ve manged to find ways of getting out of tricky situations and we’ll have to find a way tomorrow."

On being under pressure: "Sri Lanka, give them full credit. They've put us under full pressure. We’ve looked at ways to put them under pressure at all times but Test cricket doesn’t always work out for you. They got a lot of movement and were very, very accurate with the ball. We need to come out and play."

On Dan Lawrence: "Credit for his bravery to go out there and back himself. He's not the only player who’s been in this kind of situation. He went out there and tried to be really aggressive."

  4. 'England haven't been at it'published at 19:10 British Summer Time 8 September

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

Someone like Chris Woakes can bowl any team out with the Dukes ball if it starts swinging. But England haven't been at it.

I said it last night, it's just a warning sign for England. When England were 260-3 in a position of strength, make it count.

Sri Lanka may not be the best team, but they're a fighting team and they've got back into it.

  5. 'We thought this was Bazball mark II'published at 19:07 British Summer Time 8 September

    Sir Alastair Cook
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

Joe Root's dismissal shows how hard batting can be. You make one mistake and you’re done.

We saw the best of Sri Lanka today. The first innings was perfect conditions but they didn't get it right. This innings they did get it.

We thought this was Bazball mark II for England - the improved version. They lost the value of the run in this game. An example of it was staying on for those 70 runs of off-spin last night.

  6. 'Sri Lanka have it under control'published at 19:04 British Summer Time 8 September

    Russel Arnold
Ex-Sri Lanka all-rounder on BBC Test Match Special

Sri Lanka have got it under control. All of the pressure is on England. When you look at the bowling effort, there was a lot of loose balls, it didn't swing like it did for Sri Lankan bowlers.

Sri Lanka, they bowled like they did at Lord's. The basics, this is what they should have done in the first innings. You could feel the energy, the buzz, and they've now clawed their way back in.

With regard to Dan Lawrence, whenever the ball beats the bat he looks to do something, like slog it. It's too easy for the opposition to know how he's going to react.

Nissanka has been positive, he's run well. Yes, he's scoring quicker than a run a ball, but for me it's just been good shots. He looks solid, he's applying himself.

Without Jamie Smith's superb innings this match would be over. He scored 14 from his first 20 balls before taking 53 from his next 20.

He ensured England set a target of more than 150, nudging it up to 219.

Smith hit 10 fours and a six in his 50-ball 67.

  8. 'Something remarkable would have to happen for England to win'published at 19:01 British Summer Time 8 September

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

England allowed Sri Lanka back into the game, allowed them to showcase their skills. Vishwa Fernando was getting the ball to hoop around, having the ball swing into the pads of the right-handers.

England were complacent yesterday. They had 220-odd and thought the game was pretty much done and dusted.

Something remarkable would have to happen in the morning. The ball would really have to swing for England to win this match.

  9. Postpublished at 19:00 British Summer Time 8 September

You know it has been a poor day when England send a coach out to speak to the media.

"It certainly hasn't been our best day of the summer," Paul Collingwood says.

  10. Lawrence was 'frustrating'published at 18:59 British Summer Time 8 September

    Sir Alastair Cook
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

I was frustrated with Dan Lawrence today. He's a better player than that. He slogged it today, it wasn't controlled batting. As an opener, you try to get through first five, you play the situation and make tough runs. I thought he would adapt his game well to opening but he hasn't done that. When he get's in he's got to make it count.

England are looking for quality. That wasn't an inning of quality, it was slogging. He plays better than that and I do feel frustrated for him. Even the one he did hit for six was still a totally risky shot.

Buoyed by their early wickets, Sri Lanka bowled very well after Duckett and Lawrence were dismissed.

Ollie Pope played on, Joe Root and Harry Brook were plumb lbw, Chris Woakes was caught behind.

England were soon 82-7. Vishwa Fernando, in particular, was excellent and found decent swing.

  12. Postpublished at 18:55 British Summer Time 8 September

England made a right old mess of their second innings.

Ben Duckett and Dan Lawrence came out slogging.

Duckett was caught at mid-on for seven and Lawrence, under pressure after a run of low scores, had a few swings before nicking one behind having another big thrash on 35.

  13. 'I've no clue what England were doing'published at 18:53 British Summer Time 8 September

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

I thought England were good on day one, when they lost the toss, they played with a huge amount of skill. From then on, they have been poor. Credit to Sri Lanka, they're fighters. They've not got the strength in quality they had in the past, but they've got that spirit. They've been better with the ball.

I've got no clue what England were doing with the bat - Dan Lawrence, I suppose it was his last chance saloon, maybe he was told to go out and swing. It was too expansive.

An incredible innings from Jamie Smith, but for that I think this game would be done and dusted.

  14. Postpublished at 18:52 British Summer Time 8 September

England actually started today pretty well. They took the last five Sri Lanka wickets for 52.

The tourists were dismissed for 263 in the morning session, giving England a lead of 62.

  16. Close of play - SL 94-1published at 18:49 British Summer Time 8 September

Need 125 more runs to win

We've had official word. There will be no more play today.

  17. Postpublished at 18:48 British Summer Time 8 September

If that is the end Sri Lanka will only need another 125 runs tomorrow. England will need nine wickets.

Pathum Nissanka is 53 not out.

That feels like the end of the day, one that belonged to Sri Lanka.

  20. Bad light stops play - SL 94-1published at 18:46 British Summer Time 8 September

Ollie Pope was happy to risk his frontline spinner but not a part-timer.

    Off they go.

Officially that's just bad light stopping play but it will be the close. It's not going to get any lighter.
