Will Jacks is a useful number seven. He's another coming in on the back of decent IPL form but England will want 350 as a minimum.

Seales celebrates. It was a slower ball. Buttler got through that a little bit early. He's another one to get going but not kick on. You've got to give the bowler credit for that.

There's symmetry to this innings - Smith, Duckett, Root, Brook, they've all got going...

    Another fails to kick on.

Jos Buttler tries to flog a slower bouncer from Jayden Seales but picks out deep mid-wicket. Buttler, like those before him, had looked good but ultimately gets out before really making West Indies pay.

With Will Jacks and Jamie Overton coming next, it could be party time. I don't think 400 is off the cards.

    Foot to the accelerator?

Jos Buttler gets one of those trademark scoops away for four.

69% of pacers' deliveries to Jacob Bethell have been short today and he has surprisingly played only three pull shots.

33% of Bethell's runs in white-ball cricket have come off that shot, but it has led to a few dismissals as well. He has reigned in his natural instinct so far.

  7. Eng 283-4published at 40 overs

This partnership is now worth 62. It's the third of 50 or more in this innings but none of those have gone beyond 73.

with 10 overs to go, West Indies need a wicket again. This dismissal of Harry Brook was their last.

Bethell has been biding his time slightly, knowing that Motie has four overs left to play at some stage.

The left-hander watched it float up to middle stump from around the wicket and was able to get on one knee and strike it.

    Jacob Bethell!

He's been struggling to find the middle but with left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie on, he picks his moment to heave the ball high and a far.

Left-arm bowler to left-handed batter is one of those match-ups the experts talk about. Bethell took full advantage.

If Buttler finds the middle of his bat then he grows in confidence, he doesn't mind if he defends or just gets a single.

He didn't come flying out the track, but the shots that he has played will have given him some calm.

This is lovely from Jos Buttler.

The game had just drifted into a lull, so much so I had been distracted by overhearing the words 'Regis le Bris', but Buttler skips down to Justin Greaves and smacks him over long-off for six. He flat-bats the next ball for four too.

Are you joking Hugh @15.40? Three of the top four with half centuries. I just about remember the old days and this is a superb platform to build from.

I'm loving this scorecard. Too often we lose wickets in clusters. So far everyone is making a telling contribution. Keep this up and the individual big scores will come.

The good news is Jacob Bethell taking his helmet off for this concussion test reveals he's got rid of that Pat Butcher haircut.

Jacob Bethell has not quite found his fluency here, he almost feels a little bit rushed. The ball has crashed into his sternum a few times now and I'm surprised he is not wearing a chest guard against this sort of bowling.

Jacob Bethell takes a blow to the abs well, not flinching as the ball thuds into flesh. He's then hurried by another Alzarri Joseph bouncer and the ball flicks his bat, hits his helmet and means the physio is going to have to come on for a concussion test.

It's fine to be positive but we have to be realistic that this performance looks like continuing with the same recent failings - nobody quite manages the telling contribution of a century and so the score falls short of what it ought to be.

Finny has just been musing on TMS about what score England could get to. He thinks 400 is still in reach. Will Jacks is a very handy number seven.

West Indies have built pressure nicely here, just starting to turn the screw. They didn't start well and were chasing wickets from the off after winning the toss and were certainly put under pressure by the openers.

They are hoping the England batters start to go for chances.

Jacob Bethell is playing on his home ground, of course. He's been out at the IPL, opening the batting with Virat Kohli but is now back in an England XI. People have been talking about whether he should walk straight back into the Test team.

He's made a careful start here.
