Bowler Jayden Seales shakes his head in frustration.

Jamie Smith slashes at the ball and Justin Greaves, at second slip, gets a hand to it but can't hold on. It races away to boundary for four. A tough chance.

Harry Brook has a clear run to put his stamp on this team.

You wonder what Will Jacks' role is as he has never batted as low as seven before. Equally, Jamie Overton at number eight means he will have to bowl 10 overs.

So, it will be interesting to see if England can find their clarifying roles.

The umpires and players are making their way out to the middle at a blustery Edgbaston.

Remember, West Indies won the toss and elected to bowl, so it's an early test for England's new-look opening pair of Ben Duckett and Jamie Smith.

When you start something fresh, it is exciting and re-invigorating. At the end of the Champions Trophy, everyone looked a bit weathered, including Brendon McCullum.

The opportunity for a fresh start is refreshing and Harry Brook will be looking forward to getting the team to play in his manner.

England captain Harry Brook: "I'm really looking forward to it and excited for things to come.

"We want to get back to winning games and have as strong a team as much as possible.

"We need to get bigger scores individually and the bowlers need to take wickets throughout.

"We've seen how Jamie Smith can perform on the Test against the moving ball and there's no reason he can't go out there today and hammer the moving white ball."

West Indies captain Shai Hope: "We need to adapt as quickly as we can. Some of the boys haven't played here. We need to use the experience of the boys who've played here. We've got to get the first two wins and then hopefully win 3-0.

"We've got to work with what we have [as a squad]. We have the capability to win the games."

On wanting to climb the ICC rankings ahead of the 2027 World Cup: "Most definitely. We know what's at stake here. We've got to play good cricket to start the series with a win."

  13. More cricket to comepublished at 12:48 British Summer Time 29 May

England face West Indies in a further two ODIs at Sophia Gardens (1 June) and the Oval (3 June) and three T20Is (6-10 June).

Attention then shifts back to the Test arena, with a five-match series against India (20 June-4 August), before white-ball cricket returns in September with an ODI series and a T20I series against South Africa.

Tom Hartley has not been named in the XI for the first ODI but England’s forgotten man of 2024 hopes this series will mark his return to the international stage.

The spinner, who has seven caps for England (five Tests, two ODIs) and was named in their squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup, has been recalled to the 50-over squad for the West Indies series.

  15. England hoping to end losing streakpublished at 12:43 British Summer Time 29 May

England will be desperate to make a winning start to this series after seeing their 50-over form nosedive.

The hosts are on a seven-match losing streak in the format, including losing all three of their matches at February’s Champions Trophy, and have only won three times in 14 matches since the start of 2024.

West Indies, meanwhile, have won seven of their past 10 ODIs, including completing a 2-1 series win over England last November. However, Shai Hope’s side were absent from both the 2023 Cricket World Cup and this year’s Champions Trophy.

Sitting eighth and ninth, respectively, in the ICC rankings, England and West Indies are in danger of missing out on automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup. Both sides are likely to need a place in the top nine of the rankings in March 2027 to avoid an additional qualifying tournament.

Following Jos Buttler’s resignation during the Champions Trophy, Harry Brook was appointed as England’s white-ball captain in April.

The 26-year-old previously deputised for Buttler during last September’s ODI series against Australia, overseeing two wins and three defeats.

Speaking ahead of his first series as full-time captain, Brook said: “It’s a new era now; new leadership. Hopefully we can bring a lot of energy, competitiveness, and a lot of fun out there.”
