Summary

  1. Ind 111-2published at 30 overs

Nelson for India and England attempt to squeeze the runs here and apply some pressure.

Another over from Bryon Carse shown the necessary respect by Shubman Gill, who defends and leaves and sees off a maiden.

Ben Stokes has a quick chinwag with the umpires over the ball, but it plops through the gauge easily enough. Nothing doing on that front.

  2. Ind 111-2published at 29 overs

Chris Woakes teases the ball outside off stump and then nips one back to Shubman Gill with his fourth delivery. However, the India captain watches it right under his nose and flicks it to down fine leg off his pads.

Woakes is searching for an lbw here.

Brydon Carse pounds in, pushing the ball through with a bit of zip.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill largely watchful during a decent over with just a couple of singles off it.

You can see the beads of sweat on the brows of England's bowlers glistening in the sunshine now.

To Fenners at 13:37: this isn’t Ashes prep - it’s a Test series against India. There are times to practice, and times to win. This is a time to win and, if fielding first is the best way to do that, that is what England should do.

  7. Ind 107-2published at 27 overs

Midway through the second over after lunch and Chris Woakes wipes his finger across his brow and Shubman Gill smirks.

A beauty from the Warwickshire man nibbles off the pitch on a length to beat the outside edge of the India skipper's bat.

    Classical line and length.

  8. Ind 104-2published at 26 overs

The Eric Hollies Stand yet to find its voice after lunch.

Yashasvi Jaiswal pushes Brydon Carse through the covers and scampers a couple then guides the penultimate ball of the over wide of the cordon for four.

Chris Woakes, the pick of England's attack, is limbering up to bowl the second over from the Birmingham End of the ground.

  9. Ind 98-2published at 25.2 overs

Brydon Carse with the first over after lunch. Two slips in place for the left-handed Yashasvi Jaiswal, who leaves the first delivery wide outside off stump and defends the second.

Fenners: I get that bowling first is how this England team roll, but I do think we also need to bat first at times - you can't insert the opposition repeatedly in Australia and expect to win. If this is Ashes prep, then surely we need batting first prep too?

    Rufus Bullough
    CricViz analyst

21% of England’s deliveries this morning have been shorter than 10m. This is the highest proportion of genuine bouncers ever seen on the first morning of a Test in England (since 2006 where ball tracking available). Just 35% of deliveries have been on a good length, which is the lowest of any first morning session ever recorded in England.

Still feel England's bowling attack is on the one dimensional side. There is a chance that Ben Stokes is the only bowler playing today that plays the first Test in Australia. Be good to see the likes of Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson and Mark Wood involved again when fit.

The game's nicely in the balance here.

England fully controlled the first half an hour with the ball as Chris Woakes got a wicket and had a few close calls. Then India rebuilt well with Karun Nair and Yashasvi Jaiswal.

    It's been an interesting game.
