Summary

  1. Ind 161-2published at 45 overs

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill largely content to milk Shoaib Bashir for singles where possible, and defend anything a little more testing.

Jaiswal has moved on to 87. A century beckons for the 23-year-old left-handed batter.

Ben Stokes, round the wicket to Yashasvi Jaiswal, raps the India opener on the pad with his third delivery.

Shubman Gill content to block out the remainder of the over.

The skipper takes matters into his own hands, as Ben Stokes decides to take over from Josh Tongue.

Ben Stokes has made the right decision to bowl. I know India are batting really well but if you look at the first Test match, they're confident they can chase any total down. Why wouldn't you do it again?

Shoaib Bashir, collar turned up, grips the ball tightly as he paces in to bowl.

Shubman Gill has his dancing shoes on and uses his feet to get the pitch of the ball to Bashir's fifth delivery and biffs it wide of mid-off for four.

Intent shown by the India skipper.

The Hollies is chanting. They sense England need a little bit of help.

  8. Ind 149-2published at 42 overs

A fraction short from Josh Tongue with the third delivery of the over and Shubman Gill opts to pull him. He ends up hitting it a little more aerially than perhaps he anticipated but the ball falls short of Ollie Pope in the deep. A let-off for the India skipper.

What time does this guy have to get up to get ready before a day of Test cricket? Does he do it himself? So many questions!

  10. Ind 147-2published at 41 overs

Shubman Gill breaks the shackles against Shoaib Bashir as he skips down the pitch to his fourth delivery and whips it into the leg side for a couple. The ball plonks into the turf down at deep mid-wicket and does not have quite enough behind it to reach the boundary.

It's a pitch where there's something in it for the seamers. It's slightly quicker than the usual Edgbaston pitch, there's a bit more bounce. But it's a good pitch to score runs on.

Before lunch, we saw a bit of turn for Shoaib Bashir, not a lot but there is something in it for the spinners.

  12. Ind 143-2published at 40 overs

This is an attack which took 20 wickets in the previous Test don't forget, Johnny.

Josh Tongue through another over which does not cause Yashasvi Jaiswal or Shubman Gill much alarm.

This is definitely the most toothless attack England have had in recent memory. No one in this side would threaten the Aussies down under, they don't even look threatening in home conditions.

Shubman Gill is being watchful against Shoaib Bashir. He's not trying to play expansive shots. He's just trying to rotate the strike.

  15. Ind 141-2published at 39 overs

Shoaib Bashir is chewing gum, and running his hands through his hair, between deliveries.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill happy to take a look. A single apiece.

India are scoring at 3.56 an over and you'd feel, going back the years, that it's a decent rate but England will feel in control.

  17. Ind 138-2published at 38 overs

Shoaib Bashir with the first over after the drinks interval. This feels like a big Test for the spinner.

With that boundary, Yashasvi Jaiswal takes his Test batting average against England to 89.80, and becomes the batter with the highest average against England in Test history (min. 500 runs).

The player he passes is the legendary Sir Donald Bradman, who averaged 89.78 against England from 63 innings (5028 runs, 19 hundreds)

Gone a bit flat at Edgbaston, batters playing safe and not much going for the bowlers. We are all melting in the heat.

  20. drinks break

India 138-2 at drinkspublished at 38 overs

Barely a wisp of cloud in the sky at Edgbaston now as the sun beats down. Zak Crawley still sticking with the cable knit jump, though.

Josh Tongue is plugging away, bowling wicket to wicket, but slips in a wider one and Yashasvi Jaiswal carefully dabs it wide of the slips and with no third in place picks up a four.

Time for a bit of liquid refeshment.
