Is it just me or is Chris Woakes the unluckiest bowler in international cricket? Always seems to bowl beauties in great spells with no reward or has close lbw calls go against him.

    Paul, Belper

  3. Ind 132-2published at 37 overs

A hint of swing from Chris Woakes, who gets one to tail back into the left-handed Yashasvi Jaiswal but the India opener stoutly defends.

Midway through the over and Woakes strays on to Jaiswal's hip and he works him square for a single. Final ball of the over and Shubman Gill flicks him fine for four.

Woakes is bowling to a plan to both these batters and is staying patient for now.

Shubman Gill is hanging in there.

He's the sort of player, if he can get through this period of England bowling well at him, the memories of his century the other week will be coming flooding back to him.

  5. Ind 129-2published at 36 overs

First bowling change as Josh Tongue replaces Brydon Carse at the Pavilion End of the ground. The Worcestershire man, who was a little expensive this morning, bustles in and concedes just a single as he encourages Shubman Gill to feel bat on ball.

Shubman Gill is not worried about Chris Woakes' pace. He's trying to nullify the chance of an lbw by batting out of his crease.

  7. Ind 128-3published at 35 overs

Meanwhile, Chris Woakes has no time for such silly business at the other end. Metronomically hitting his length to Shubman Gill as he persists with targeting the India skipper's front pad.

Woakes duly strikes Gill on it as he defends the final ball, prompting an appeal, but having burned an appeal in the previous over Ben Stokes declines to send it upstairs.

Full credit to Shubman Gill. I believe in these situations you have to be a good actor and he looked guilty.

I reckon he's acted brilliantly there and England burn a review.

  9. Ind 128-2published at 34 overs

Bryon Carse with a bit of gamesmanship in that over to Shubman Gill either side of the lbw review.

First he flaps his left out before bowling, prompting the India captain to pull away. Then off the final ball of the over - in the manner of Darren Gough - sticks his tongue out and stretches his face to make his eyes widen.

A healthy chunk of willow on that and Shubman Gill survives.

It looked like a really good shout there and Brydon Carse is celebrating.

Jamie Smith told Ben Stokes to review that immediately.

  13. England reviewpublished at 33.4 overs

Brydon Carse strikes Shubman Gill on the pad with a full delivery, but he may well have hit this.

Ben Stokes gambles on the review.

A return to more traditional Test match proceedings in the half an hour since lunch, with England bowling just 5% bouncers, compared to 21% in the morning session.

  15. Ind 26-2published at 33 overs

Chris Woakes tempts Shubman Gill with a wider one, and the India skipper bites but the ball flies wide of England's two-man cordon and away for four.

A couple of balls later, Gill defends and a thick edge races away through the vacant third region.

England captain Ben Stokes hunches over the turf, a little frustrated.

I think if you're the India captain, even though Shubman Gill had a face like thunder when Ben Stokes won the toss, you'd be happy you didn't bowl first now.

  17. Ind 118-2published at 32 overs

Brydon Carse, gold chain jangling round his neck, bounds in to complete his 10th over but all is not well with the Durham man.

Carse is limping a little as he makes his way back to his mark for the final few balls of his 10th over. A bit of grimace, too.

He may well want the physios to take a look at him.

I just don't think the bowling first all the time is the way to go. England didn't win the Headingley Test because they bowled first, they did it because India pressed the button in both innings and couldn't catch.

  19. Ind 116-2published at 31 overs

Shubman Gill looks like he is starting to settle in here a little bit, and works Chris Woakes both sides of the wicket for a pair of twos.

This is starting to feel a lot like a batting day. Can India cash in?

England have got a lot of energy out there, so although India are on top of the moment England have the energy about them.
