Summary

  1. Ind 15-1published at 9 overs

Chris Woakes has 1-4 from his first five overs of the match and could have had another wicket but for an umpire's call on an lbw against Yashasvi Jaiswal in the seventh over.

He's also got a lot of use out of his appeal cries in the opening 45 minutes. He's pleaded with the umpire on at least three occasions. He's very up for this.

A tight line that resulted in a risky leave, an in-nipper that would have been lbw but for an tiny inside edge and then a wicket.

Quality from Chris Woakes. The crowd is up.

That's a breakthrough that felt like it was coming. Chris Woakes has got the ball to move a bit and getting KL Rahul is a big wicket for England.

That happens to KL Rahul quite a lot and he's on his way.

'Horrible way to get out' - Woakes removes Rahul

Chris Woakes makes the early breakthrough for England with KL Rahul playing onto his stumps. The bowler opens his arms wide with elation.

    That felt a little inevitable.

England bowling much better than day one at Leeds so far, very encouraging.

England are bowling well. They're pitching the ball well.

Sometimes, as a batter, you have to respect the conditions and play accordingly.

I'm glad you're excited Andy. And I'm equally pleased to report that we're in similarly high spirits on the cricket desk, although not all of our cheer is because of the on-field action.

With so much sport going on in July, we've moved up a couple of floors and the different view - both inside and out - is a welcome change. The Irwell is looking lovely, even if it is a bit overcast.

India add one run to their total.

Is it just me or is the tension & excitement around the start of a Test match up there with Christmas morning? Come on England, let's make some early inroads!

    Andy, Banbury.

  10. Ind 14-0published at 7 overs

Three maidens in a row for Chris Woakes, who is very much in the hunt for a wicket.

Yashasvi Jaiswal looks a little unsettled after his lbw close shave and is beaten by one which shapes away.

Umpire's call saves Yashasvi Jaiswal. It wasn't far away at all.

These are the ones that are very frustrating for the fielding side and give you much needed relief as a batter.

It's umpire's call on impact. The ball is clipping the top of the bails.

A lifeline for Yashasvi Jaiswal on 12. Ben Stokes grimaces.

Chris Woakes is very excited about this one - he thinks he's got Yashasvi Jaiswal out lbw.

This time, Ben Stokes goes for the review.

Yashasvi Jaiswal is trying to assert himself this morning.

He's in full control of the shot to find the boundary.

That's a brilliant stop, absolutely stunning from Ollie Pope because that would've gone for four from Yashasvi Jaiswal if he wasn't there.

  17. Ind 14-0published at 6 overs

Ollie Pope reacts quickly to deny Yashasvi Jaiswal four runs, diving to his right.

However, no one can do anything to stop Jaiswal's second attempt two balls later, the ball sailing through the covers and away to the rope. He's driving nicely this morning and showing intent.

  18. Ind 9-0published at 5 overs

Consecutive maidens for Chris Woakes. Unlike his previous over, there is little drama to report.

The camera has panned around and found a painter in the stands, with a landscape of Edgbaston already well under way. I would love to do that. It's right up there with being the person who updates the honours boards.

I think the Indian batsmen may need to carry the bowling attack in this Test. They look a bit toothless without Bumrah.

That was a brutal delivery by Brydon Carse bowling around the wicket. That was horrible.
