Summary

  1. Ind 9-0published at 4 overs

Yashasvi Jaiswal picks up his second boundary, driving confidently through square. The ball steams away to the rope.

With the final delivery of the fourth over, Brydon Carse finally gets the pitch to do something, with the ball kicking up and into the batter. Much to Jaiswal's relief, his last-second block doesn't carry.

Losing the toss and being inserted may not be the worst thing for India ahead of this Test match. The day one Test batting average across the last four years at Edgbaston is 38. Of the six English grounds to have hosted a Test in that timeframe, only at Trent Bridge is it higher (53).

Sometimes dressing rooms are divided between batters and bowlers but it doesn't feel like that with this England team.

It feels like it's 11 players all going to take on this task together.

  4. Ind 5-0published at 3 overs

Chris Woakes goes through the full range of emotions during his second over.

The next ball after his lbw appeal, he has his hands on his head. Later in the over, his brow is furrowed. Very expressive early on.

    A maiden.

It might have just been going down the leg side. It was a planted foot. It would've needed to have swung a little bit.

  6. Ind 5-0published at 2.1 overs

Huge roars around Edgbaston as KL Rahul is struck on the pads.

Jamie Smith and Zak Crawley both leap up with their arms in the air but the umpire says no. After a lengthy discussion Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes opt against the review.

Replays show it was missing the stumps.

This is the 10th time Ben Stokes has chosen to bowl in a home Test out of 12 matches.

Both times he's chosen to bat first he's lost, including against Australia here at Edgbaston in 2023.

  8. Ind 5-0published at 2 overs

KL Rahul is keen for an early run after tapping the ball into the covers but is sent back by his partner.

He does a little gardening with his shoe and later gets off the mark with a single in the leg side.

Brydon Carse will bowl the second over to KL Rahul.

  10. Ind 4-0published at 1 over

Yashasvi Jaiswal is up and running with a four off the penultimate delivery of the first over, glancing the ball to the rope.

He flashes at the final ball but does not make connection.

  11. Ind 0-0published at 0.1 overs

    And we're off!

Chris Woakes bowls to Yashasvi Jaiswal, who isn't tempted.

It looked like there was a reflection, or light, that could've been a distraction for a right-handed batsman there.

Chris Woakes continues to pace around with the ball in his hands as the umpires wave their hands in the general direction of an issue in the ground.

Ben Stokes has run to the rope for a discussion with a member of the grounds team.

Windows are being opened and closed. A reflection seems to be the cause of the pause. I love cricket.

It could be a high-scoring game with the boundaries this short because the outfield is fast.

First session crucial whilst the cloud is around. Take 3-4 wickets and we’re in. India push through and they can push on. Fascinating.

It's cool and cloudy. Even before considering his love of a chase, that's not a surprising decision from Ben Stokes.

The players have made their way onto the pitch for the national anthems.

There was also a minute of applause for former England batter Wayne Larkins, who died on 28 June at the age of 71.

A familiar face has been in the England camp in the lead-up to the second Test, with Moeen Ali spending time with spinner Shoaib Bashir in the nets.

Will Bashir be among the wickets today with England bowling first?

India's thinking needs some clarity. They've not won a lot recently. I'm not convinced they [new bowlers brought in] are going to be that threat.

If Jasprit Bumrah was fit, he'd be playing. How are they going to take those 20 wickets? Someone is going to have to step up and maybe, if they hold onto those catches, they can do it.
