There will be criticism, and maybe some smiles from Australia. But let's take nothing away from Henry and Foulkes. Three absolutely beautiful deliveries. Brilliant bowling.

Not great bowling at all, even my Mum could get wickets on this pitch and she's 73.

    Tony in Hull

I am also at A&E with my wife and just connected to the WiFi to watch the ball hooping through Joe Root’s defence. Come on I need this to last the night!

  2. Eng 5-3published at 4 overs

    Bethell 1, Brook 0

The ball continues to move all over the shop with Brook being hit on the pad more often than bat. He has one big swipe and misses. It's another maiden.

Perfect preparation for Australia in a month this in very similar conditions. Can I go back to sleep now?

  4. Eng 5-3published at 3 overs

I'll be honest, I did not think I'd be looking up England lowest scores stats this early in the winter.

The third over is a maiden from Matt Henry to Jacob Bethell.

  5. How's stat?!published at 01:17 GMT 26 October

We might be going too early with this one but England's lowest total in men's ODIs is the 86 they were bowled out for by Australia at Old Trafford in June 2001.

Their lowest in New Zealand is the 89 they were skittled for by the Black Caps at Wellington in February 2002.

  6. Eng 5-3published at 2.2 overs

It has not got any better, Cian.

If England were trying to save Harry Brook for later it hasn't worked. He's out there now.

Sat in A & E watching for updates. I thought I was delirious when I saw Jamie Smith get out. Come on England you are my only entertainment.

An absolute peach. Through the gate of a great player. A superb piece of bowling. England's best player in Joe Root out and they are on the ropes.

  9. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 2 overs

    Root b Foulkes 2 (Eng 5-3)

Errm. The previous balls were all about the movement off the pitch. This one has swung in from Zak Foulkes and bowled Joe Root through the gate!

I can hear the chuckles all of the way from Australia.

An interesting move. England have pushed Jacob Bethell up to number four. That's usually Harry Brook's slot.

That is a brilliant piece of bowling. An absolute jaffa from Zak Foulkes. Ben Duckett's held on the crease and it's just straightened.

  12. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 1.3 overs

    Duckett c Latham b Foulkes 2 (Eng 4-2)

Another one! Ben Duckett walks off shaking his head. He has nicked another beauty, bowled this time by 23-year-old seamer Zak Foulkes.

It nipped away from round the wicket, took his edge and was brilliantly taken by one-handed by wicketkeeper Tom Latham.

Two of England's Test players go early.

  13. Eng 2-1published at 1 over

England fans beginning the day with a rendition of Jerusalem is a tradition we see all over the world. I can just about hear the distant bellows of one, maybe two, such supporters in Mount Maunganui.

If it's you, get in touch.

  14. Eng 1-1published at 0.3 overs

Joe Root emerges in the opening over. England will hope this is the first and last time we say that before January is out.

We talked about New Zealand players's being rusty and it's the same for Jamie Smith. It's just enough off the pitch for Maft Henry.

  16. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 0.1 overs

    Smith b Henry 0 (Eng 0-1)

Bowled first ball! It's a beauty from Matt Henry that nips back off the pitch to go between Jamie Smith's bat and pad.

Smith has to trudge off. His winter can only get better from here.

I am little bit surprised New Zealand have bowled first. It's a nice day, conditions look good and I would have batted first.
