Some good news for England. They have passed the lowest ODI score for a match played in New Zealand. That was the 73 the Black Caps made against Sri Lanka at Auckland in January 2007.

  2. Eng 87-6published at 16 overs

For the first time New Zealand have just pushed the field back as Harry Brook misses with an almighty swipe.

Jacob Duffy is coming on now too. He was number one in the T20 bowling rankings until recently and hasn't even got a go yet.

  3. 50 runs

A slice of fortune as Harry Brook gets to fifty in 36 deliveries. He's got a big top edge on an attempted pull shot but the wind takes the ball over the boundary at deep third.

  4. Eng 76-6published at 15 overs

    Brook 43, Overton 11

235? At one point I wasn't sure England were going to make 35.

Jamie Overton slams Matt Henry off the back foot. It may now be time for a bowling change. Another seamer Nathan Smith is coming on.

  5. How's stat?!published at 02:20 GMT 26 October

There have been 31 men's ODIs at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui prior to this one. The average first-innings score is 235.

Matt Henry is going to bowl an eighth over on the spin after drinks. A certain Brendon McCullum used to do this as captain. He won't be liking it quite so much now.

Dual Citizenship, watching my Toronto Blue Jays, and listening to my England cricket team…hoping the Blue Jays score more runs than England, and concerned that they actually might!?

    Ian in Toronto

Looks like we’ve all stayed up to watch New Zealand v Harry Brook. I should’ve gone to bed.

    James in Preston.

  8. Eng 70-6published at 14 overs

    Brook 42, Overton 7

It is little wonder then Zak Foulkes is excitedly hunting his fifth wicket. He appeals with gusto after the ball squeezes through Jamie Overton.

It sounded like a nick behind but I think he's up for the lbw. It was probably outside the line.

Drinks are coming onto the field which means England's can't lose another wicket for three or four minutes at least.

This is the first time Zak Foulkes has taken four wickets in List A cricket. His previous best was the 3-15 he took for Cantebury against Auckland in the Ford Trophy in February 2024.

  10. Eng 69-6published at 13.2 overs

Flicked for four through mid-wicket this time by Harry Brook. He's timed that perfectly.

  11. Eng 65-6published at 13 overs

Again, these are not stats I wanted to be bringing you so early in the winter.

Mitchell Santner seems to have forgotten he can change bowlers although if it ain't broke...

England's lowest scores in men's ODIs in New Zealand:

    • 89 - Wellington, February 2002
    • 123 - Wellington, February 2015
    • 127 - Christchurch, February 1983
    • 130 - Wellington, February 2008
    • 134 - Christchurch, February 1984
  13. Eng 60-6published at 12.3 overs

Matt Henry beats Jamie Overton with another seaming delivery as he continues for a seventh over. Overton looks confused as to how he wasn't bowled.

  14. Eng 58-6published at 12 overs

I hope no-one has flown from the UK to New Zealand just to watch this. It's bad enough wasting an extra hour in bed.

An outstanding delivery., Beautiful seam presentation and he gets that to move away. This is a really outstanding spell of fast bowling from Zak Foulkes.

    Curran c Latham b Foulkes 6 (Eng 56-6)

Ah. It had only been three overs without a wicket but given what had come before it felt like some sort of fightback. Not to be.

Sam Curran nibbles at a length ball from Zak Foulkes. He has four wickets and Tom Latham another catch behind the stumps.

  17. Eng 55-5published at 11.1 overs

Still no bowling changes. Harry Brook pings another for four on the drive.

He does like batting in New Zealand.

  18. Eng 51-5published at 11 overs

    Brook 32, Curran 6

This should be a confidence booster for Sam Curran, who drives for four as Matt Henry continues for a sixth over in this superb opening spell. The ground appears to still be filling up. You wouldn't want to be a local and have missed the start.

  19. How's stat?!published at 01:56 GMT 26 October

The lowest total England men's side have defended to win an ODI is the 165 they posted against Pakistan at Headingley in June 1979.

England also defended 169 against New Zealand at Sophia Gardens in June 2013.

  20. 6 runs

    Eng 45-5published at 10 overs

    Brook 32, Curran 0

Harry Brook tucks a four off his hip before clubbing his second big six to end the powerplay.

With two wides, that's 12 from the over. That makes it pretty even after 10 overs, right?
