It is blowing a gale as the players emerge for the anthems. The thinning hair on Devon Conway's head is taking a beating.

This is still one of the most picturesque grounds in the world.

Fast bowler Jofra Archer will sit out the first one-day international against New Zealand as England manage his Ashes preparations.

The 30-year-old's omission from the match in Mount Maunganui is not injury related and he will be available for the second ODI in Hamilton.

Archer did not arrive in New Zealand until yesterday, alongside fellow Ashes quicks Josh Tongue and Mark Wood.

Neither Tongue nor Wood are in the white-ball squad, but will be in New Zealand for their Ashes build-up.

  6. 'Stay in the moment'published at 01:41 GMT 26 October

England captain Harry Brook: "We were going to choose to bat so happy with that. We had no preferences on what we'd do. We looked at the stats before the game and it was 50-50 so we just fancied a bat today.

"There's no issue focusing on this series [despite the Ashes] and a key message of the last few months is to stay in the moment as much as possible, and play what's in front of you. Hopefully we can have a good day with the bat and put such pressure on."

  7. 'Got to be smart with the wind'published at 01:39 GMT 26 October

New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner: "It looks like pretty good wicket, obviously a little green, but think it will play pretty well.

"Hopefully it does a little bit early on and we can restrict them early. You have just got to be smart with the wind today."

    Hello, hello.

After just 61.4 overs were possible in the T20s, we move on to the 50-over action as New Zealand host England.

This is the first of three matches and, if it wasn't already the case, the inevitable Ashes talk will loom large.

England's prep ramps up again with Joe Root, Ben Duckett, Jamie Smith and (from the second match) Jofra Archer join the ranks for their first matches of a winter.
